Relic.com has an
update on the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -- Soulstorm patch that was
expected last week ( story). The patch is delayed due to further
complications; word is: "Unfortunately, we are having a hard time figuring out
how to get around all sorts of new issues related to our digital distribution
partners. We absolutely want everyone who bought Soulstorm, whether it was
in-store or online, to be able to keep playing and enjoy the patch, but the
myriad of different security implementations have led to a surprising number of
problems." Thanks Akki and
Relicnews.

I took a look at Direct2Drive a while ago and the big stopper on that for me was the separate patches that have to be run for each service. A regular patch for ordinary users but then there has to be for the D2D etc. DRM is just another layer to a problem that they haven't solved.

Copy Rejection...err... "protection" strikes again. I have bought every release put out by Relic (Homeworld, IC, DoW, CoH) but this is pretty frakkin' ridiculous.

What a fiasco.
We absolutely want everyone who bought Soulstorm, whether it was in-store or online, to be able to keep playing and enjoy the patch, but the myriad of different security implementations have led to a surprising number of problems. "Security implementations" is a euphemism for DRM. But this word has become a bad word to use by those in the industry. This is the first time that I have heard where an official has blamed many DRM implementations for causing the delay of a patch.
Add one more reason why DRM is horrible. Now it delays patching.
