Subscription-Free Spellborn in NA in November

Acclaim announces The Chronicles of Spellborn will launch in North America on November 27, the same date as the game's recently announced European launch (story). They also announce this will be another of their subscription-free ("free-to-play") offerings: "As with all of Acclaim’s games, Spellborn will be free to download and play once players have registered for an account. But those players who want to access advanced features and unlock extra game content will have the option to purchase a premium service that will offer several payment options."

But Guild Wars also suffers the side effects of being subscription-free.
The major offender in my book is the community zones where you have everyone talking in one chat channel. And some of those conversation are fairly adult and way past adult in content.

When he says 'this business model' he's not talking about no subscription fee. He's talking about getting 1/2 the game and paying for the other 1/2 in $10 tidbits. It is a viable model in other parts of the world (most particularly, Asia.) But here in the US it's bulked at and no game has come out using it that has had any amount of success. Many have closed down simply because it doesn't work.

    It doesn't work?

Tell that to 10 million Guild Wars boxes sold.
That's because Guild Wars isn't F2P, and you just mentioned why it isn't.

The number one industry priority right now seems to be to find ways to charge for things in new and creative ways.
When will MBAs learn that "innovation" is not necessarily a good thing in the business world? Our current economic crisis is a perfect example of that.

The model is apparently somehow so attractive to companies that they're going to keep hammering away with it until enough stupid gamers buy into it to make it profitable. The number one industry priority right now seems to be to find ways to charge for things in new and creative ways.

Has nobody learned that this business model does not work in North America?
