The best way to combat the pre-owned market is to make a game that people want to keep playing. The Halo games sold very well because they have such popular multiplayer components.

But if you release a game with a short singleplayer experience and a shitty or non-existant multiplayer experience, people are going to beat it and trade it in as quickly as they can.

It's sort of arrogant to think your industry should be above every other industry that outputs product. Videogames aren't the only thing on craigslist and eBay.
Well to be fair videogames, music and movies ARE unique in that you can make a perfect reproduction of the original product without special tools or assistance. Something like a book can be PDF'd but that's impractical at best not to mention not an exact copy of the original. You'd need access to some place that does binding and to find all the materials to actually make a faithful reproduction of a book and most of those places will not make copies of copyrighted content.

So in one sense they're kinda right that their industries aren't like other ones but the problem is that the music industry already tried this and failed miserably. Videogames are less important than music to most people so I sincerely doubt that people will tolerate it. I also agree with the guy who said that people will devalue the product more and more with digital distribution. They might eliminate the middle man but their prices will go down as well.

Look at Steam as the perfect example of that. I doubt many people buy at full price, instead waiting a month or more for it to drop to $20.00. Why? No box, no manual, no resale value, why pay more when you're getting less than you did a year ago?

I was expecting yet another quote blown out of proportion, like David Braben's comments on the matter were, however it seems this particular Bungie dev excels at dickbaggery, suggesting that the very existence of studios could be threatened by this.

They don't want to sell you physical property, they want to sell you a license to use intellectual property. [...] It's part of the reason you're seeing this big push for digital distribution, they can directly control the channel and eliminate the middle man.
I think that's right on the ball. I don't know if you got there via the obvious route or from looking at it in depth, but it's right on either way.

But, I'm far from convinced that publishers realise that if they want to reduce consumer rights it reduces the appeal of the product, so they must offer something in return.

Publishers and developers seem to have this stunningly poor grasp of business, it's like they were having a chat in the pub with someone actually quite bright, but then went back to the office and turned it utterly craptastic. Warning signs seem to trigger going increasingly hardline rather than reviewing the position and altering strategy accordingly. Whatever starts out as a sensible concept comes out like a desperately greedy attempt to fuck over customers.

It's proved right there in the fist few words: Bungie's audio director. Now, either audio director is an odd name for company director in charge of oral PR communications or it means this guy makes soundtracks for games. What sort of fucked up business arrangements has the soundtrack guy going out making public statements about a clearly strategic marketing/distribution issue?

It isn't exactly the ideal solution, but Steam does have a program where you can transfer license of a no-longer used Steam game to someone else with a Steam account for 10 bucks.

Hear, hear.

And I've said this many times before, but I hate digital distribution as it is since you can't sell the game to someone else after you're done. My Orange Box PC game, despite being a boxed copy, is permamently linked to my Steam account apparently. I can't sell the game without selling my whole account!

If they figured out a way to let me sell off my digitally downloaded games, I'd be all for it. I think it's very archaic that we're still buying games at brick and mortar stores, when we all have broadband and the ability to get games online. This would save a lot of gas, time, and energy if all games were available online.

But those savings would be lost if I can't sell a game I don't like to someone who would like it.

Yep, they'd definitely like their customers to be 'Pre-Owned'.
We'd better stop that shit quick-smart or the next second-hand car you buy will include an extra slice back to the motor manufacturer!

They don't want to sell you physical property, they want to sell you a license to use intellectual property. I'm not saying it's right or fair, I think everyone should have the right to resell something they own but thats their reasoning.

It's part of the reason you're seeing this big push for digital distribution, they can directly control the channel and eliminate the middle man.

Also people, stop selling your games to GameCrap, you're getting heavily ripped off, they treat their employees like shit and you can afford the extra 5 minutes it takes to list it on Ebay or some forums.

1. Pre-owned market had "big" effect on Hal Sep 26, 2008, 22:44 Hyatus

These guys need a reality check. They are selling a product. If I want to resell that product it is my own perogative. I sell it, I lose the product. If I want it again, I can rebuy it. I don't know why they feel they are entitled to anything more than other media producers get(books, dvds, etc...).
