Midway now freely offers the PC edition of The Suffering, Surreal
Software's survival/horror game set in a penitentiary that is currently being
adapted into a feature film. The free version of the [M]ature-rated game is
supported by advertising, and the 1.3 GB download can be found on
AtomicGamer,
ComputerGames.ro, and
Gamer's Hell.

How did the download from Atomic Gamer work out? I tried to dl it from both Gamershell and Atomic Gamer and had the download hang at 99% (1 second left) both times...with a message from NOD32 telling me the file contains a virus. I assume NOD32 is preventing the dl from finishing. I'm wondering if NOD32 and Avast are seeing the advertising program included with the game as some kind of a virus?

It was a great game but good lord it was a horrible port, the controls especially become maddening at times even with a gamepad. Controls felt fine to me. I played through both games with M&KB and had no problems whatsoever. Alone in the Dark... now THAT game has control issues.

The ads are literally stuff like this in the middle of gameplay "And now a message from our sponsors". I'm not even kidding. Don't bother downloading it, just pick it up in a store for $5.00. It was a great game but good lord it was a horrible port, the controls especially become maddening at times even with a gamepad.

The second one was okay, but to me it focused way too much on combat.

the 2nd game was never meant to be a full sequel more of a suffering 1.5, since it was done in what 9 months?

Nice. I thought the Suffering games were pretty solid and had great ambience. I also liked how they injected some moral choices into the horror genre. It's a shame that the developers are working on the inevitably craptastic Vegas mini-game collection instead of The Suffering 3.

The only adverts are one pop-up when you load the game and one when you exit. At the moment its that crappy Death Race movie.

Definitely would be great! But that oldgames shit site that started will make sure that the greedy bastards make you pay even beyond any reasonable age of the game.

This was a very cool game when it came out. I played all the way through it, and that usually means I liked it a lot.
Hopefully the advertising doesn't ruin the experience.
