6. Re: Verizon FiOs is throttled to some extent Sep 25, 2008, 23:44 Creston

So yeah, you could say your not limited or throttled by today's standards but that is only half the truth

I don't really agree that what you are calling throttling is actually throttling. You're talking about the concept of shared bandwith, which is something that EVERYONE on the Internet lives with, usually at multiple points. Blues' server can only handle so much data at one point, so sometimes the board is slow to respond.

Is he throttling us? Or is this just a simple matter of x users over y bandwith sometimes means a subset of x is going to run a little bit slower for a z amount of time?

If you've got a Gig pipe to an apartment complex, and everyone is on line at 6.30pm, your downloads are going to be slower. That's not throttling. That's simple shared bandwith.

Throttling is saying "We think you're running a torrent, so we're going to limit your connect to 256k/128k regardless of how many people are currently on your pipe."

And it's absolute bullshit. But they'll lobby for it and lobby for it and grease more corrupt politician's palms for it until they finally get the prioritized TCP/IP that they want.

5. Hey! Sep 25, 2008, 23:39 Creston

We're running out of IP Addresses again! Oh Noes!!!1!1!

That's the... 7th time now we've done that in the past decade?

Wasn't the threat of running out of IP addresses the whole reason CIDR was developed?

I guess the IP6 guys have to keep bringing up that empty threat in an effort to get their system off the ground.

4. MySpace's new ad network Sep 25, 2008, 22:08 Dan =0)

From the article, first seven words in the first paragraph:

MySpace, the social network turned music repository,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought MySpace, at first, was a place for musicians to post their music and find each other?

3. Google Public Transit Sep 25, 2008, 16:35 BlightCrawler

I started using this in the Bay Area after moving to get to work, and often to get around to downtown San Jose or up to San Francisco. It's an awesome service and makes using public transit so much easier, especially if you have to transfer or aren't sure what the quickest options are.

Saves me a lot in gas and car wear and tear too.

2. Ebay forcing Paypal Sep 25, 2008, 13:45 Tumbler

Forcing Paypal isn't that bad an idea from a buyer standpoint. I rarely buy on Ebay anymore for a variety of reasons but I can't remember the last time I didn't use paypal.

But when I'm selling stuff Ebay is downright greedy. Using paypal essentially doubles the fee to the seller by taking an additional fee out of the payment after they charged you to list and to sell the product on ebay.

But it's their business, they can charge what they like.

I buy once in a great while off ebay, and buy/sell often off craigslist.org.

Price of doing business with ebay I'm afraid. The site isn't what it used to be, feels like I'm being bombarded with spam most of the time now (spam auctions) and ebay would be wise to put some time into helping people see items form as many sellers as possible rather than the same item from the same seller 80 times before seeing the next sellers auctions.

Ironclad FANBOI! & Stardock too!

1. Verizon FiOs is throttled to some extent Sep 25, 2008, 13:32 Paranoid Jack

One larger fiber feeds a set number of houses which basically divides or throttles that prem to a set bandwidth. Of course the speeds can be moved up or down to some extent depending on needs or usage. I can't remember the specifics. I think it's one large fiber (1024MBs) feeds thirty two smaller fibers (32MBs). And don't quote me on this since I don't work for Verizon. But out west it's going to be divided like this for now. One 10MB Data (DSL), up to four HDTV signals, and four VOIP signals... per prem. Again all those presets can be changed from what I understand. So yeah, you could say your not limited or throttled by today's standards but that is only half the truth. Again that is my understanding for FTTP. FTTN or fiber via VRAD will be allotted similarly if not the same.
