Fallout 3 video interview on IGN puts several of the developers on
Bethesda's upcoming RPG sequel in the role of "Q" in describing the weapons in
Fallout 3. These range from traditional firearms to more futuristic
devices, and they also highlight gameplay aspects like weapon wear, and how ammo
limitations allow them to give the player nice weapons early in the game while
still limiting their use.

I would. I still re-play Troika's and Black Isle's games to this day. Oblivion? 30 minutes to figure out it was shallow crap. Agreed. It doesn't matter if a game is incredibly polished and has a flawless presentation if the fundamental gameplay is weak. Almost all classic PC games were relatively buggy and unpolished, especially CRPGs. What made them classic was their fantastic design.
vs whatever tripe Pete Hines and Todd Howard say. Pete: Dude, check this out! I can blow off that mutant's leg in slow motion! And it will replay the shot five times!
Todd: Bahaha, that's totally awesome! Fallout is all about ridiculous violence! Do it again!
Pete: What the hell? I just missed.
Todd: WHAT?!? HOW?!?
Pete: Hmm... my Small Gun skill is pretty low. Maybe that has something to do with it?
Todd: That doesn't make any sense. Your skill with a weapon should have no effect on your accuracy! How about we just change it so you do more damage instead?
Pete: Brilliant!

Don't wanna fuck around with upgrading Flash, so I'll just assume that most or all of the energy weapons are out and a bunch of gritty, STALKER-type weapons are in. I mean, we once had laser weapons, plasma weapons, EMP weapons, pulse weapons, and the solar scorcher--and that was just energy weapons. I'm not really expecting... well, any of those back in. Sure, everyone just got to the Turbo Plasma Rifle or gauss weapons and forgot about the rest, but it's the principle that matters.

So Faust, let me get this straight, you would trade in Beth for 2 companies known for releasing horribly bug ridden games? Granted Black Isle is called Obsidian, but I think it counts. I would. I still re-play Troika's and Black Isle's games to this day. Oblivion? 30 minutes to figure out it was shallow crap.
My number one concern about Bethesda is that they make games that are a mile wide but a puddle deep. Giving you a vast world to do little of interest and do of little variety does not a good rpg make. Exactly. It's all surface polish. They leave it up to you to "role-play" which basically means LARPing in their game. Really check it out:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Roleplaying
Role-playing at its finest.
Compare this quote by Chris Avellone (Fallout 2, PS:T designer):
Our goal at Black Isle was to take the Planescape license and make a role-playing game that was both fun and different from anything else on the market. We strove to avoid the mainstays of such games, dwarves, elves, evil wizards, and kidnapped princesses, replacing them with talking items, unusual allies, and enemies that you had never before seen. (...) We wanted a powerful story, and we didn't want to be afraid of it being too deep for mass market; we just wanted to make it good. We sought to take the role-playing genre in a different direction from most RPGs on the market; building a truly interactive environment for the gamer, where what you believed actually had an impact on the game. vs whatever tripe Pete Hines and Todd Howard say.

My number two concern about Bethesda is the console centric design decisions of Oblivion that do not translate well to the PC and I do not think that will change with Fallout 3.
Additionally what scares me is that whereas modders fixed some of the console centric design decisions in Oblivion, Bethesda has not made a commitment to releasing the tools that would be needed to remedy some of the console centric design decisions in Fallout 3.

Does anyone know of a webpage that has the story of Fallout 1&2? Honestly 3 is the first one in the series I will be playing and I would like to catch up on what I have missed. If you just need a summary, Wikipedia should be fine.
I think Bethesda is one of the most overrated RPG developers out there. Give me Black Isle or Trolka any day over these talentless ass clowns I agree, although I still enjoy their games. I don't play them expecting really deep RPGs, but action RPGs with light to moderate role-playing. Under those expectations, their games are pretty fun. They do a good job of creating large worlds, even if there isn't much to do in them.
As for Black Isle and Troika, I love their games, but it's important to remember that they make very different games from Bethesda. Vampire Bloodlines is one of my favorite games, but while replaying it recently, I quickly realized that it was a lot smaller than I remembered. Every building you go in has a quest associated with it, for example. It's one of the best in terms of story and quests, but the exploration aspect of the game is weaker. Bethesda's games give you more freedom, but the RPG aspects aren't as tight.

I think Bethesda is one of the most overrated RPG developers out there. Gotta agree. I tried to enjoy morrowind and oblivion both and was bored to death...they create this huge, expansive worlds that feel totally empty, esp the people that inhabit it.
Would love for this to be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath.

I just wish I was getting a little more in my $120.00 survival edition. $120? its $70.
EDIT: Never mind. Did not know Amazon had a special CE version of the game. Not worth the extra 50$ IMHO.
