The EGOSOFT Website
announces a slight setback to release plans for X3: Terran Conflict,
saying the space combat sequel is now due on October 10, a week later than
expected ( story). They chalk the delay up to "unforeseen delays
in the production process," and promise more screenshots and videos in the
interim to ease your pain. Thanks Gamer's Hell.

dane, the only PC game I'ver ever returned to best buy, was BC 3000AD. Only reason I was able to return it? The store manager bought a copy as well.
Never again.

Creston,
Not the number of keys, it's the unintuitive menu structure and the complete randomness of it. If things were actually assigned to keys, that might be easier.
I've gone back and played Elite (Oolite) and it's not "Wow, was that it?" It was: "Hey, that's still fun."
Not so sure a comparison to HL2 is really all that relevant, but whatever floats your rhetorical boat.

The thing is, Elite was great because it was simple without being dumbed down
Elite was great because it was the first game of its kind that was so expansive. Anyone who tries to play Elite now thinks to themselves "Wow, was that it? That's what we were all so hot and bothered about?"
I understand the complaints about the UI, though I never understand people that say it takes them a week to learn. It uses like ten keys. That takes you a week to learn? How long did it take you to learn the UI in Half Life 2?

" I have seen some space shows where it is quiet like in the movie 2001 a space odyssey, the lack of sound in space conveyed a feeling of loneliness and vastness. A space sim should maybe experiment with that."
Here, I'll help you program this game yourself.
- Set your desktop background to black. - Use paint to put ~ 20,000 white pixels in it. Go crazy, make some pixels double size! Have a few red ones for good measure. - Remove all desktop icons. - Turn off your sound. - Stare at your monitor screen. Hit a few keys on your keyboard.
There, you are playing "Realistic Space Simulator v1.0 by Overon."
Let us know how long you enjoyed it.

"unforeseen delays in the production process".
Unforeseen? You mean exactly like the delays you had with the original X3? Because you got a copying house that's made up of three malaysian kids with a single burner, and they couldn't get you the discs on time? Those kind of unforeseen delays?
Also, why does the Steam version suffer from your unforeseen delays in the production process?

Your loss. The modern Battlecruiser games are actually pretty good. You should ask your friends whether it's ok for you to check one out sometime.
My comment was offered in response to the guy who asked: Well has anyone tried to make a game where you don't hear explosions in space and where you can travel for a long time and look at nothing through normal space? I have seen some space shows where it is quiet like in the movie 2001 a space odyssey, the lack of sound in space conveyed a feeling of loneliness and vastness. A space sim should maybe experiment with that. Not every comment merits kneejerk Smart-bashing. At some point you've got to break from the herd and get a new gig. That one's just tired.

I like most of the X3 games...in theory. The UI, however, has to be the absolutely worst ever. Usually my X3 play style goes something like this:
1) Pick up game, play game for a week and finally figure out the UI, get overwhelmed with running a galaxy and shelve it.
2) Three months later, reinstall game. Find that I've retained nothing of how the UI works, and relearn the game again.
And I even played Eve for about three years. So, I know a thing or two about messed up UIs.
The thing is, Elite was great because it was simple without being dumbed down. Ah well, you can't go home again.
The only space sim I felt ever came close was Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos. Loved that.

But see that's the thing... I would actually play a X3/Egosoft game over a Battleclusterfuck.. er Battlecruiser game.

The Battlecruiser games offer this. You can warp from point to point if you want (and you will), or you can fly at normal speed for days on end if that's your thing. The choice is yours.
Also, you can hear explosions in space, but it's relatively subtle and quiet. Again, these are games.

Mmm, and it's worth pointing out that by Egosoft have steadily acted on the complaint that the sectors feel 'boxy' by varying sector layouts; in X3:R the further you go from the core territories into less well-charted territory, the bigger and less 'square' sectors tend to be. And really the spaces between the jump gates are just the built-up areas, the industrial and trade zone. Combat quite often takes you well beyond the confines of the jumpgates into very empty space, and there are some goodies tucked away in remote places, as well as some hauntingly sparse or empty sectors.
So of course there's a complaint that it takes too long to fly from A to B... Possibly from people who haven't discovered the time acceleration options but there you go. Making a space game is quite a good way of earning contempt and hatred if that's your idea of a living!
I'm with Ecthelion, there's all sorts of things that strike me as imperfections, but this is a series of games that has sucked me in and keeps me coming back -- I'm really looking forward to getting home from work and unleashing my new M3+ class Eclipse on some Xenon scum. And I'll certainly be buying Terran Conflict.

Although the game did have explosion sounds, they explained that the sounds you heard were computer simulations of what it WOULD sound like based on the light emitted iirc.

Because space is a big empty void of nothingness much like your skull. Space games use jumpgates and hyperdrives for the same reason that you can see and hear explosions in the vacuum of space, it's a game. why cant I fly all the way from Earth to Mars in 1 go if I wanted without using jumpgates?
Oh yea I forgot..X3 takes places in these little spaces between gates that make the universe feel very small:-S Why do you bother bashing space sims that you clearly hate, like X3? Egosoft is never going to make a game that meets your standards (their games seem fundamentally different from your idea of a perfect space sim), so you might as well give up and move on to something else. Honestly, is there anything at all that you like about the X games? Every thread where one of their games is mentioned, you take the opportunity to bash it once again. I'll never pretend these games are perfect, and I certainly understand a little criticism. But it's starting to seem like Egosoft raped your mother and killed your father, the way you go on.
