Fallout 3 Interviews

The Fallout 3 Interview with Pete Hines is an English transcript of a video interview with Pete Hines discussing Fallout 3, the resumption of this RPG series. Now that the dust has settled from the troublesome certification of the game down under (story), they ask if its violent content is going to get the game in Dutch in Germany: "That’s still to be determined. We actually don’t believe in talking publicly about the differences between English, German or Australian versions. We will make sure that the game is out and available in Germany, but we don’t want to get into discussing what changes we might have to make." There is another interview with Pete Hines on Shacknews discussing the game after its showing at the Penny Arcade Expo.

Level scaling is only implemented in critical small PARTS of FO3 where you the player cant escape. I.E. some kind of very scripted sequence, where it was impossible to get back to the outside world.

The emphasis is on PARTS. Dont blow this out of proportion. Level scaling is out of the picture for 99% of the game.

Maybe. I thought it was more that the player always had a reasonable challenge, even when they were high level. The problem is that if the enemies are always comparable to you, there is no point in leveling is there?

Bethesda wants their game to be as accessible as possible, meaning that they don't want anything to feel too difficult at any point. At least, that's what I'm assuming their reasoning behind level scaling is.

Level scaling could be mitigated by just blocking out areas for level ranges. So a bunch of mobs over here are level 10. No problem, go skill up on the mobs over there and then go back and own those level 10 mobs. So why can't Bethesda do that?

They obviously think it's a good idea, since they're sticking with it. Me, I think it's one of the worst game design decisions made in the last few years. It's completely moronic. Thank God they were at least smart enough to make the game easily moddable.

they FUBARed Oblivion with it to hell and back and it is a lesson worth remembering.
The problem is, any designer with a shred of foresight could have seen the problems that level scaling would bring yet they implemented it anyway in Oblivion. If they are capable of making such lousy design choices, I can't help but worry what kind of screw-ups they'll make in FO3.

I'll just wait until all of the bad design decisions are modded out like in Oblivion. Who knows? Maybe some fallout fan turned modder will actually get this game close to doing the Fallout name justice.

Jeryyk yeah I heard about that as well, but they also stated it would be very hard to get into those places before their "desired" level anyway, so its kind of a moot point. I will give them the benefit of the doubt with regards to lvl scaling, they FUBARed Oblivion with it to hell and back and it is a lesson worth remembering.

I have zero faith in the game but I'll pick up the CE for the bobblehead/clock/lunch pail for no other reason.
Haha, that's exactly my path as well. I'd kill for that bobblehead.

According to Bethesda, there is limited level scaling. Basically, some mission critical areas where you can't escape are scaled to your level so as to make them possible to beat.

Of course, this is only what Bethesda claims so I'm not sure how reliable that is.

Still, Bethesda has a pretty good track record. A little optimism wouldn't fucking kill you, now would it?
I dunno. Oblivion was pretty mediocre, with its saving grace being modability. If FO3 isn't getting a construction set released any time soon, then I'm less inclined to want to pick it up. Modability is essential for these games.

I wonder if they're still doing that stupid levelled enemies crap with FO3. I haven't read anything about it, so I'm not sure. Anyone know?

You cant just turn on a feeling of optimism just because it'd be nice.

I don't know "exactly". It's just a hunch since the gameplay vids were so uninspiring. I've played Oblivion and the game seems very similar when it comes to the character models, environment textures, animation, combat, etc. And I can pretty much get most of that from watching the videos. When you see a movie preview, can't you kind of get the gist of what it is and whether it's worth a watch? Yes you can.

Why dont you get the Punkblocker Greasemonkey script and just block him?
Yeah, why don't you just do that? How do you set that up? I'd like to block myself also.
