Diablo III Status Report

Eurogamer has a write-up based on the latest Blizzard podcast, summarizing the state of Diablo III development. Topics include their process for creating and repeatedly refining the game's content and a good deal of information on the game's loot, discussing the greater emphasis on the value of gold in their new economy, and how the best items will still be acquired through trade. There is also another mention that they will consider adding removed classes in a future expansion, again specifying the Necromancer as a class that may be revisited.

Remove a popular class, then mention it will "probably get put back in in an expansion pack."

Boom, immediate demand for expansion pack.

If EA did this, everyone would scream that they're selling you half a game.

I would probably say more than a few are selling their souls to the devil to play this game now.

Well the issue isn't Blizzard, the issue is a gaming site cherry picking comments from the webcast and throwing their hopes/wants on top of it.

Example of this is the Necromancer. Blizzard has said that the Necromancer is not in Diablo 3, but potentially added later on. Or the Barbarian, which was added so there was at least 1 class from Diablo 2 (stated by Blizzard) but already in this thread people are asking why they are including the Barbarian.

What will happen is 1 site will get 1 piece of information here, that is total rumor, and run with it up until Diablo 3 is gold then have headlines that the Necromancer isn't in the game, people will be angry and complain that the Necromancer was promised in the Diablo 3 box.

Was it in that 200+ thread?
No, it was in this one:

I just think they are trying to build anticipation too soon. What's the point of talking about it now when it's not even due this year?

the best items will still be acquired through trade.

Do they mean trade with other players? Cause trade with the NPCs usually yields poop, at least, after about act 4 of normal difficulty. You can't buy uniques, set pieces, or the yellow items (I forget the technical term). The only exception being the occasional plated belt of the whale, with +99 to health, and high damage pole-arms for a whirlwind barbarian.

I don't understand the whole thing with the Necromancer. First they say no new classes will return but the Barbarian, now they hint that Necromancer might return? Or do I missunderstand it completly? I really like the necromancer so I would be happy if he returned.

Although I would be happier if they could release the damn game already...

9. Regarding Color Scheme Aug 29, 2008, 11:21 Ataneruo

I'm satisfied with this explanation that the D3 game world will gradually progress to darker and darker environments (I'm talking about atmosphere not merely color) as one progresses. Why didn't they just say that in the first place instead of saying that D2 fans don't know what they're talking about regarding gameplay visuals and don't know why they enjoyed the atmosphere of the original game and that anyway it was impossible to recreate that in 3D?

Blizzard quite rightly has long-term revenue plans for this game and that (unfortunately for gamers) means dribbled out content. And likely new bits of content that is not free. It looks great, but I'll be waiting a while before I play it. Let the price go down.

I think the Diablo franchise (or anything from Blizzard) will automatically be hyped because of the quality and polish Blizzard puts into their past and present titles.

Remember when they revealed Diablo 3? All they did was put up pictures and the entire internet went into a hype frenzy, coming up with theories as to what title it could be until it was revealed.

Give the people quality and they will give you publicity.

Was it in that 200+ thread? Then no. I refuse to go into that shit storm circle jerk. Although, I was able to add some names to the tard filter.

Wilson went on to discuss several aspects of the game in detail. He explained that, as with previous Diablos, the best way to get the best items would be through trading, but that this system would be more accessible than it was in Diablo II.
