The Ryzom Website is now
accepting new players into this science-fiction MMORPG that recently resumed
operation following another forced hiatus ( story). The game is
currently free to download and play, but it is not clear if that will
change nor is the game's current business model apparent. Thanks
Eurogamer.

Oh, no quests. Well, people in-game say it's a sandbox MMOG like EVE. How true is that? Skill-wise, it definitely was. As you used skills, they became stronger. So if you were bored with using your spell attacks, you could switch to melee for a while, or harvesting, or crafting. Or you could dedicate yourself to one skill area and just focus on that.
I don't remember if there was PvP in the game. I never got very far once I left the island. My biggest issue with just grinding mobs is that they were always grouped together. Ryzom has some very cool herding mechanics in place, where mobs will migrate around, and even come up to you and sniff you out. However, if you attack one, they all come. The only way I lived was to jump in to water since they couldn't swim. Combined with the lack of quests, and there was no way to gain xp unless I joined groups (which I don't usually do).
It was a sandbox; that is very true. And that was the fun part. Here's hoping the new owners can improve it. I'd love to return.

It's probably the most original MMORPG I've played. Why did it die twice?

The skill system in Ryzom was great, but it's of the old-style MMOs after you leave the island. That is, no quests. Just grinding mob after boring mob. Anyone know the status of their Ryzom Ring thing, where players could add content? I really enjoyed the island, so I'm hopeful some of those ideas are carried over to the mainland.
I may sign up again. I really enjoyed the prospecting skill and how it worked.
