Age of Conan Future Plans

The Age of Conan interview on Boomtown talks with Funcom's Erling Ellingsen about Age of Conan, discussing plans to add content to the barbaric MMORPG. They talk about Tarantia Commons, a new zone that will introduce new types of quests, plans to give some of the game's existing dungeons a visual makeover, new high level content that will involve longer quests and "epic" boss battles, DirectX 10 graphics, and more. Word is the game's first add-on is planned next year, and it's not clear how many of these changes will come in content updates before the game officially expands.

Speaking of which, does it have sliders for araeola size and darkness?

Or do you just some idiot artist's conception of an average, non-descript one?

Lol wow the ignorance of some. He was never fired. After Shadowlands (which I both enjoyed and deplored,) he went on to lead the early AoC team.
OK that makes more sense. I was wondering, how could he work on AoC if he was fired?

For those that didn't know.. Gaute Godager the lead dev for AOC was also the lead dev for AO. He was reponsible for the shadowlands exp fiasco which got him fired.

Time to move on. Heard the game is already back to 400,000 subs from 800,000 sold units but I dont even believe that number.

Although i was not impressed at all with the graphics. But that's how a lot of these MMO's are, Second Life has crappy graphics, WoW's graphics are nothing to write home about. I want an open world MMO like second life, or Vegas with graphics as good as Crysis or Age of Conan.
Graphics only represents 25%. The other 75% comes from story, gameplay, and music. Judging a game purely on graphics is just effing stupid.

I've never heard of this fiasco, could you elaborate? Also if he was fired for the fiasco how is he still working for Funcom? Did he get re-hired?

Too little too late. They will be doing major server merges by the beginning of the year.

Another MMO that completely failed to provide their prospective audience with anything interesting besides great graphics. Gameplay makes a game NOT graphics.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this game follow the ancient tank/taunt and healer model?

And made Conan a lousy-damage tank?

I.e. jumped the shark before it even left the gate.

After WAR releases this game is dead
If only WAR were anything but a cotton candy fun-town MMOG where one arm is trying to duplicate everything WoW does and the other is creating one of the most boring combat systems in the genre. Far worse then LotRO's.. if thats even possible.

AoC still has a very respectable number of players and the games base systems are very enjoyable. They just need to pull their hands out their asses and get to work on it. From the videos I've seen of the new content and planned releases it looks like they are actually trying to improve the game.

Also the PvP content on the test server is very enjoyable and they've managed to achieve a lot of balance with the big gem nerf going on. It's undergoing a great deal of attention because Funcom knows if they don't get this one right they are going to have a lot less then 400k subs.

As to the patch testing process being horrid. Thats what you get when early players all but demanded at least one patch a week. And it couldn't be one that contained a simple list of stuff, no.. at least a full pages worth of notes.

Last let me say I still have an open account to AoC and I play it now and then. But 1/2 of me does because I remember how AO went from broken craphole to one of the most innovative and enjoyable MMOGs of it's day. The other 1/2 is loyal to my guild, which is still going rather strong (though frankly we are more a web community that spans several MMOGs, so we'll survive this even if AoC does tank.)

I bought AOC the day it came out, I tried to like it I did. The #1 problem with this game however is the dev's, they are utterly out of touch. These press releases are just further evidence of that.

I think FUNCOM is going to go the road of Flagship or just be bought out by SOE soon.

It isn't just that AOC is failing and will soon be counted as a utter failure of a MMO and example to all.

It's because many just like myself won't ever buy a FUNCOM product again. It's one thing to kill your product, it's another to kill all future products.

The graphics were superb, but the game launch was horrid. Whats even worse is that since launch it's gotten worse and worse then even the state it was in at launch.

Why was the shadow lands a fiasco?

Ao is a pretty sweet game. It has tons of content and shadow lands is cool. I dont see how anyone can be negative about AO.

Funcom has made some really awesome games. Their MMO's may not be "perfect" for everyone but they are both quality games.

@Manic Half

Fair enough, good post.

"I'm not really talking about the content in fact I dont even play WoW."
I have dabbled in many other games including Guild Wars & WoW but not long enough to consider myself an MMO player. But I still have an opinion about there graphics & carebear gameplay.

"Although i was not impressed at all with the graphics. But that's how a lot of these MMO's are, Second Life has crappy graphics, WoW's graphics are nothing to write home about. I want an open world MMO like second life, or Vegas with graphics as good as Crysis or Age of Conan."

I still stand by that statement. And no I dont work for any game company.

I guess I'm in the minority around here. I actually love the game. It's so refreshing to get away from a game like WoW and play a game like AoC, with far more lore & realism. The game play mechanics are top notch & the graphics are the best out there for an MMO. It does have some problems like all MMO's though. Overall it's a great game & well worth your $$.
yet, in a previous post you have made in your history, you have said you have never even played WoW.

I'm not really talking about the content in fact I dont even play WoW.
so how can you possibly judge it against AoC? i also got a laugh when i noticed you have also said this in the past..

Although i was not impressed at all with the graphics. But that's how a lot of these MMO's are, Second Life has crappy graphics, WoW's graphics are nothing to write home about. I want an open world MMO like second life, or Vegas with graphics as good as Crysis or Age of Conan.
gee, i wonder where you work?

ok, normally I think you guys are all crazy here but. After reading the interview and reading what you guys have posted here and what I have read other places from players....

These devs completely dont get it. Wich is pretty wierd. Players are leaving in droves because no high level cotent so they are adding a new level 30 zone inside and already exsisting city...

The guys claims to be listening to players but none of the content they are adding seems related to playrs complaints at all.

only 400,000 subscribers? Didnt they have a million or more to start out only a few months ago? That is horrible. How can you not take players seriously in the face of those numbers?

on another note,,,

I really like Anarchy online. I think its a great MMO. They obviously have some skill at this put seem to be in denial about where this game is headed. Its pretty obvious to me that this game is not likely to recover regardess of the expansion packs they are adding.

You dont lose 600,000 players in 90 days and have a prayer of staying afloat. This game toast.

Warskull, the way FUNCOM seems to work is different teams are in charge of a single gameplay aspect. For example they have a team for mounted combat, and mounts. Another team works on certain characters. Another team on the interface...and so on.

You would think that this would work pretty great. But it turns out there is very limited communication between teams, and in general it seems that CHAOS rules I think they need some direction at their studios, they need to hire one guy to focus these guys, its like they are not even in the same company lol!

Their QA and patch testing is fucking woeful...
There QA team is a single "QA Manager" who reads the forums for bugs. None of the players test on their test server because even if stuff is reported they just push out the patch anyway. I doubt they tested anything in that game. How do you miss some of the ridiculous bugs like not being able to fit enough materials on a character to build a keep, not being able to open your keeps doors to get into it, or the old Pyramid of the Ancients (where stepping in reveals the main quest is broken.) They either knew about all these and didn't care, or never tested any of it.

The kind of bugs the players are finding aren't these obscure things, they are things completely failing to work for their intended purpose and discovered within 5 minutes of a patch.

Hell, with all the stuff promised and never deliver along with all the bugs they should call the expansion "AoC: The other half of the game."
