C&C3 State of the Union

The C&C Support Forums have a post from community manager APOC with a "state of the union" for community members concerned about EA's commitment to Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and the Kane's Wrath expansion. Finalizing Red Alert 3 is currently in focus, but he says "my heart is still engraved in C&C 3 and Kane's Wrath and I am working equally as hard on the prospect of our next patch and the SDK." The MOD SDK situation is a good news, bad news deal, as while he is "working early on our RA3 MOD SDK," but for C&C3 he says "the MOD SDK situation is looking increasingly dire due to technical reasons, but I am exercising every option." He also says the "recent patch 1.01 has barely been out a few weeks" and that they don't want to upset the balance of the current ladder season as reasons for forestalling a the next patch for the game, but reaffirms their commitment to an update: "I understand the desires of having a new patch soon and the SDK asap, but I want you guys to know neither is forgotten, its simply a busy time these past couple of weeks especially with Red Alert 3, but I assure you I am working on all the above for C&C 3 and KW to the best that I can internally and with my strong army of volunteers." Thanks Ant and Planet Command & Conquer.

While I would love to dig up some videos of matches, I can't find any tournament videos probably because the game was not played long enough to grow any real fanbase.
You can find over 5000 match replays here:

http://www.gamereplays.org/CNCZeroHour/replays.php?game=2&tab=upcoming&show=index&tab_new=popular&display_mode=standard

If you watch the top replays, you'll notice a distinct lack of tank rushes.

the silly Generals subfaction gimmick was not fun (the Street Fighter-esque single player didn't really help that part) the upgrades failed to attract my attention as being anything more than tedious, and the game still felt like it had too few units that actually mattered for anything.
I thought the subfactions added some much needed variety. Granted, some of them were poorly balanced but it was fun to have specialized units and powers. The upgrades for each subfaction were very substantial, so I'm not sure how they were "tedious." Finally, most of the units in ZH are good for something. There is quite a lot of unit-mixing in the competitive matches.

I only know the people I talked to that played it in ClanBase. I gave away my copy years ago, the silly Generals subfaction gimmick was not fun (the Street Fighter-esque single player didn't really help that part) the upgrades failed to attract my attention as being anything more than tedious, and the game still felt like it had too few units that actually mattered for anything.

Was never a big fan of either, but if I had to choose, I'd pick C&C3 over Generals/ZH. Generals was just too simple, very little variety in units.
...what? ZH had much more unit variety than C&C3. It actually had support units too. The sides were also very distinct, much moreso than the GDI/Nod/Scrin.

Not to mention the competitive players I talked to always told me it was tank-rushes, but that's just high-level online play.
Um, I'm not sure which competitive players you talked to but they were completely wrong. Tank rushes are suicide in ZH because the rocket infantry is so powerful. There are also a lot of quick vehicles (Humvees, Helix choppers, Battle Buses) that can garrison rocket infantry inside and have them shoot out while moving. Tanks get pwned in ZH. C&C3, on the other hand, was all about tank rushes because the devs severely nerfed rockets, so there are no really effective counters to tanks.

My favorite RTS games overall (still terrible at them though) would have to be Red Alert 2, and Rise of Nations, just to get a sense of my tastes. The territorial control system in the latter is one of my favorite changes to the typical formula.

I found vanilla Generals a bit dull but with ZH it became a very fun game. Never played MP beyond AI skirmish tho, I saw some demos and it was like real-time chess, only with less pieces. Impressive to watch, but personally unappealing.

Never bothered with C&C3, Jerykk just confirmed my initial suspicions and all I've heard since is bad news.

RA3 looks promising. I don't expect any real innovation from any C&C/RA anymore, but when they have a proper go they can put it together very well (of course, given the number of these games, you'd think they could manage that every time).

From the genuinely curious... can someone who's a fan of these franchises tell me what these games bring to the table nowadays that makes so many still flock to them?
Fast-paced, micro-intensive action. At least, that was the appeal of Generals. C&C3 was quite dumbed down.

Tiberium Wars Online Multiplayer was and still is a farce. I dont know if it's the bad engine or the total failure of post release support but it's sad.
