Crytek Q&A

Crytek Q&A on GamesIndustry.biz chats with Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli about Crysis Warhead, console development, and the game development game. Along the way we learn that everyone that Crysis needs expensive hardware to run is mistaken: "Well, there's a misconception in the market right now about that, which is that Crysis can only be played on PCs that are very expensive. It's not true - Crysis can be played on a USD 600 PC at the second-highest configuration that's better-looking than any console game, right now."

The game could run silky smooth, and it would still be shit. Graphics should never come before Gameplay.

I have a nifty blue line!

By "played," Cevat actually means "the game launches."

By the time warhead comes out, you can play Crysis on your free AT&T phone. At the highest setting.

Btw, Cevat's "600 dollar PC" that can run Crysis on High with all bells and whistles on is powered by an 8600 GT. Raise your hands all of you who think an 8600 will run Crysis on High silky smooth?

Guys?

5. I'd buy a Crytek game if... Aug 21, 2008, 20:09 Verno

I think I'd consider purchasing a Crytek game in the future if they didn't set all of their games on islands, give them laughably bad gameplay with repetitive elements and generally focused on something other than eye candy.

I'm sorry but I have an HD4870 - one of the high-end ATi cards released long after the game - and performance is still very lacking. I can run Team Fortress 2 with 8xAA/16xAF and everything maxed out and managed over 110fps at 1680x1050 (it looks stunning); with Crysis I can run it with most settings on high, 0xAA and run around 40-50fps, dipping considerably lower. They can claim whatever they want but they put out a demo of the game and people can find out for themselves exactly how well it runs. I don't see where this misconception is.

Yeah, they should get together with id and cry a bit...

CPU upgrade? Check. Graphics upgrade? Not sure. I can wait for DX11 or grab a second 4870 now... or do both. Hmmm. Sunny

"Crysis can be played on a USD 600 PC at the second-highest configuration that's better-looking than any console game, right now, but we're going to make games for the console from now on anyway, because you're all a bunch of thieving pirates who didn't buy my last game! *crys*"
fixed...
