Tiscali Games
reports on what they learned at a just-completed presentation about the upcoming
PC edition of Grand Theft Auto IV, also offering some screenshots of the
PC edition. The article is in Czech, but
a rough Google translation can help English speakers czech out the new info,
which includes support for resolutions up to 2560x1600, higher-resolution
textures than the console versions, longer view distances, and movie-creation
capabilities that include a TiVo-like ability to capture gameplay from up to 30
seconds prior to initiating a recording. There was also mention of new the
multiplayer mode, but Rockstar held back details on this.

GTA4 was the first game in the series that really grabbed me. I was let down by the graphics, there's a lot out there that looked better even a year ago, but making them less blurry can only be a good thing. |

It would be nice if they could make it work properly with a force-feedback wheel. None of the previous GTA games worked with a wheel but I understand the driving physics have been updated.
I can imagine driving around using the proper controls and using the mouse to aim my gun out the window to shoot random pedestrians being pretty fun.

almost all of the environment bitmaps in the 360 version of GTAIV were super fuzzy when viewed within a few virtual feet. Though it wasnt a game-breaker, it was at times jarring when walking around the city. Nice to see that there will be higher rez textures on the PC

psst hence why he put in 'a rough Google translation'. Be thankful it wasn't 'dog out the new info' or some such.

Blue, tell me you didn't write that? I laughed, but I have a soft spot for cheap wordplay.

Sweet, record 30 secs BEFORE you hit the button? So if you see a totally awesome thing and weren't recording, you can bang hit record and its down? Nice!
Fion: Supposedly the leveling system is differant in fallout 3 compared to oblivion. So hopefully they learned that mistake. Oh well, even if they haven't, OOO (oscuro's oblivion overhaul mod fixes the whole oblivion leveling thing) or something similar will come out for FO3

Yeh thank god for the modders. Oblivion was transformed into a much better game thanks to all the texture packs, LOD fixes and interface fixes. I actually re-installed the game about a month ago to play Shivering Isles, and didn't install any mods. It's almost a different game.

I expect Fallout 3 will be exactly the same. The interface will still be consolized, the text will still be huge and the textures will still be low-res. Well at least with Fallout 3 if it's anything like Oblivion, (and it should be, same exact engine and all,) it'll be extremely easy to mod and we'll be seeing mods that fix the UI pretty immediately and mods that fix the fubar elements of gameplay soon after. Assuming Fallout 3 uses the same dumb-ass monster leveling system that Oblivion used.
IE I don't know about any of you but I despised fighting goblins at level 2 and killing them in 3 hits, and then facing lvl 40 goblins who took 5 minutes to kill each and hundreds of hits. Some great mods fixed this relatively quickly and I do hope Bethesta has learned from Oblivions mistakes. From some of the videos up on gametrailers.com, it looks like at the very least they've done a decent job of keeping the style of Fallout 2 and it won't be 'Oblivion in the future'.

I expect Fallout 3 will be exactly the same. The interface will still be consolized, the text will still be huge and the textures will still be low-res. The only difference between the two versions will be the absence of 360-specific gamepad button icons in the PC version. /weeps

Oblivion was a huge letdown for texture resolution, and that wasn't even a port, just a same-day release as the 360 version! Multiplatform = port, only more half-assed. Oblivion was designed for the 360. All the gameplay mechanics, interface and technical aspects were developed specifically for the 360 and its target audience. The game was then ported to the PC during development, which is why there were no changes to the HUD. With multiplatform development, PC usually gets the least attention as it doesn't have to go through any sort of certification. This is why multiplatform development is bad.

GTA4 had no limits, and graphically it offered more detail per pixel than any other title. That's going a bit far. No limits..achieved through endless repetition?
Look forward to the PC release.

I'm looking forward to it, but I'm easy to please when it comes to graphics. For example, I think Half Life 2 still looks great. If I had bothered to play Crysis, I might think otherwise, but after Far Cry I had no interest in any further games from Crytek.
I recently played through all of the 3D GTAs on the PC (up to SA, that is), and I still think San Andreas looks pretty good. I've read more than one review of GTA:SA where it was stated that the graphics weren't much better than Vice City, and I want to know what those reviewers were smoking. Everything looked sharper and clearer in SA; the difference was eye-opening for me, having played Vice City only the day before. The screenshots make it look a lot worse than it actually does in-game, and I wouldn't be surprised if the same was true of IV. Anyway, since I feel that way about SA, I think the graphics in IV will definitely not be a problem for me.

While it wasn't as high res as some other titles, those titles could afford to be super high res because they would load a limited number of textures in memory. GTA 4 had to be fast loading, dynamic and ready for anything. Hopefully that means the textures get to be twice as sharp, considering the mainstream PC videocards now have twice the video memory of the 360/PS3. Holding my breath for it, sharper textures rule.
Oblivion was a huge letdown for texture resolution, and that wasn't even a port, just a same-day release as the 360 version! Glad to see that Rockstar at least acknowledges the capabilities of the PC. Was embarrassing to see Bethesda forget, and leave sharp textures up to modders ffs. Really, really hoping that mistake isn't repeated with Fallout 3...
