He told me, "Shit, I had to replace my PS2 every two years". He bought three of those damned things over time because they all burned up. My original Playstation would use the lens to scratch discs and then stopped reading altogether (gee, wonder why ). Sent it in for service, got it back, and immediately, out of the box, it did the exact same thing. Sent it right back to them.
It scratched about 6-8 discs and they sent me replacements for 2.
After that, I had no desire to use it, or buy a PS2 (some of the games looked neat, but I wasn't about to trust their hardware again). And until the PS3 hits $299 with backwards compatibility, I see no reason to entertain buying one.

Is there a Little Big Planet bundle planned? I was planning on picking up a PS3 right after I get my new HDTV in the next month or three.
And yes a lot of this is repeated news. There have been stories about both the PS3 and the 360 having a longer life cycle this generation. Plus the rumors of an add-on BluRay drive for the 360. I think most of it is spin or plain old PR from both MS and Sony.
On a side note my bro's 360 finally went to gamer heaven... or the junk yard. He was having over-heats (three lites in the ring) while playing 2K sports games. All other games ran fine. Anyway he bought it a couple months after release and has blown it out regularly with an air-can. But that still didn't help.
Apparently he took it apart since he figured he would rather buy a new Arcade version than pay somebody to fix the one he had. It was two and a half going on three years old and it had built up quite a bit of dust inside around the CPU and circuit board. He blew it out and put it back together and its still three lites dead.
No surprise to me since he plays it twenty times more than I play mine. He's got hundreds of hours out of that system for Oblivion alone. I figured since he was unemployed for over two years he has had to pass three thousand hours of usage between games and movies.
I expected him to get all butt-hurt like so many MS haters do on the Net. But he didn't. He told me, "Shit, I had to replace my PS2 every two years". He bought three of those damned things over time because they all burned up.
Maybe that's how Sony plans to make a profit with the PS3.

That article contains no new information whatsoever. The same thing has been said for months now. There have been similar articles in the past regarding the 360 with similar loss numbers ($3 billion losses).
Dave Perry no longer works at/for Shiny Ent. and he doesn't work for Sony either. So I'm not sure what he stands to gain by repeating information that was already public and has been for months.
However I do see his source of income these days is speaking engagements at conferences, the list is quite long. So I guess maybe he is just running out of original things to say.

Well, I didn't already have a 360 so it was a much easier purchase for me to make, but I can fairly confidently say that I wouldn't have purchased a PS3 if I had already owned a 360.
On another point you bring up; I read perhaps a month ago a quote from a spokesman for Microsoft that there are definately no plans for them to put out a Blu-ray external add-on.

A beefed up Tomb Raider Underworld engine is what is being used for Deus Ex 3, so I'm glad it looks pretty decent!
