2. Re: I played this the first two months... Aug 18, 2008, 09:45 xx

i got in the beta midway thru it. all i seemed to do is turn in circles waiting for my guns to reload every 20 seconds. it would take 10 boring minutes to sink the 4 ships and end the quest. since i'm a pve only player cuz i'm a clutz i knew i wasn't gonna buy. the land battles were a joke. at least with any fantasy mmorpg its click fireball, mind freeze, shout hoo woo, recharge, fireball till dead waiting to level up and try a new skill. you killed the critter in 30 seconds and moved on exploring and grinding. a mmorpg is only a pull the slot machine handle and see the results addiction using items on the dead critter instead on coins in the bin to me.

1. I played this the first two months... Aug 18, 2008, 02:49 JohnBirshire

Got up to level 50 as a French Naval Officer, then realized we couldn't even field anymore than 6 Ships of the Line *when we needed something like 24* to defend ports. Not only that, there were numerous bugs that allowed a port to be thrown into contention in five minutes when it was supposed to take 24-48 hours. *can't remember exactly how long* I then rerolled and got to 40 as a Pirate, but quit after spending three nights of 6-8 hours each trying to find a SINGLE person to attack and failing. It even got to the point where I was sitting outside of enemy ports camping it in plain view. *just to get chased off by the 6 SoL gank squad that came by once or twice* I believe that was due to ridiculously low server populations since the game ended up not being nearly as popular at launch as they thought it would be. Although I did hear that a week after I quit they deleted about 2/3rd of the servers and moved many of them together, to ease the fact that many people felt as if they were playing a single player game.

When I played at least half of my guild quit before having to pay for the second month, and any organization as either faction was falling apart rapidly. Nationality chat consisted of nothing but never ending debates on whether the game was worth playing, almost NOTHING else of any importance was ever discussed.

I wholeheartedly believe this game is going to go the route of Earth & Beyond, quickly. I guess the only saving grace I had with this game is that I got a lot of books read. PvE simply consisted of sailing up to broadside range on a merchant ship, setting sails at battle speed, then putting cannons on autofire, followed by reading a book until the enemy ship sank. Rinse, repeat, 100s of times all the way from level 1-50. Not since macroing characters in Ultima Online have I ever spent 100's of hours "playing" a game without actually "playing" it. *but at least in Ultima Online you had something to look forward to when you were done*

In all fairness, there was something good about the game, the quest text. Much of it was creative, original, and well worth reading; since much of it was taken seriously and written by popular genre authors. Ironically, with a swift kick in the groin, there was no reason whatsoever to do the quests. Open Sea PvE gave you three times the experience as well as three times the income. Well, so much for that quest idea. I guess the most ironic thing of all was the fact that I liked the quest text written by Jess Lebow so much I actually bought his latest Forgotten Realms book and read it while doing Open Sea PvE. Best of both worlds, right?

One thing I admittedly didn't really get into however, was the economy, which was a major factor of the game. That being said, it was discussed in great detail on forums and in Ventrilo, and I hadn't once heard a reason to give it a shot. I did buy quite a bit of goods from merchants as well as sell loot to people that were participating in the economy however, which quickly went from bid wars to buying items dumped on the auction house for a fraction of what they were worth even a week or two earlier. *meaning the economy went to shit*

It's unfortunate, but I can't think of a single reason why I'd even give this game a remote chance at playing again. Ahh well, I got my $65 dollars out of it, even if it was ultimately a disappointment.
