The official Grand Theft Auto IV
Website has been updated following the announcement that the PC edition of
the open-world action sequel is in the works ( story), and now
sports the
Games
for Windows LIVE logo (thanks
GameCyte). While the PC announcement includes word that it will offer "newly
expanded multiplayer just for the PC," since one of the earmarks of the Games
for Windows LIVE program has been the offer of cross-platform multiplayer
matchmaking "with other Windows® players or with or against XBOX 360 players (in
supported games.)," this provides the opportunity to speculate about whether
owners of Grand Theft Auto IV for the PC may be able to play online with
owners of the Xbox 360 edition.

How do you play Steam games without logging into a Steam account, offline or otherwise?
I can't say I know of a GFW Live game with a ranking system, but I've gotten achivements playing on dedicated servers.
I've got Gears of War for the PC and never had any connection problems with it.

You have to create a gamer profile to use when playing all your Games for Windows – LIVE games, even off-line.
Games for Windows Live includes some support for dedicated servers, games played on dedicated servers don't contribute to your achievements or ranking online.
Games for Windows Live is plagued with connection problems, just ask the people who bought Gears of War for the PC.
Basically everything that Steam does right, GfW does the opposite.

It uses "Games for Windows LIVE" which is actually worse than "Gayspy", hard to believe I know but then this is Microsoft we're talking about. In what way is it worse?

the ingame browser will probably still suck (especially if its Gayspy), and.. well, its just bad. It uses "Games for Windows LIVE" which is actually worse than "Gayspy", hard to believe I know but then this is Microsoft we're talking about.
But it's FREE, oh thank you Microsoft! we are eternally grateful for your generosity.

Well, I think i'll just stick to GTA4 on the console, even though GTA's on the PC been fun, the multiplayer component on the PC version will undoubtedly suck because the people making/in charge of it are bastards.
Outcome a: Its made to work with console, this guarantees a large pool of players, but it will be marred with lots of problems connecting, browsing servers and hosting your own.
Outcome b: It does not work with the console version, which means very few servers since everyone is playing it on the console, the ingame browser will probably still suck (especially if its Gayspy), and.. well, its just bad.
In short: The end is nigh.

There won’t be GTA4 Cross-Platform Multiplayer.
Unless there’s some sort of super secret update to Windows LIVE that actually makes it work like a normal server browser (out of game) client like Steam, Gamespy, Xfire etc. that allows you to connect to dedicated servers (and filter games that aren’t hosted on someone’s cable modem) then the multiplayer option will be a huge failure, almost guaranteeing GTAIV will be the most pirated game for the PC in 2008.

Other than the fact that you're essentially installing a windows component that monitors everything you do... Fucking spyware, basically. Huh, what spyware functionality are you sugggesting it has? I googled around a bit and didn't find any mention of anything of the sort.

Don't forget Far Cry 2 and Crysis Warhead too. Those could be good. Oh and the new STALKER game. This is fantastic news. PCs and consoles being compatible only helps gaming overall.

...and GFW Live is free now, so there is no reason not to play. Other than the fact that you're essentially installing a windows component that monitors everything you do... Fucking spyware, basically.
I hope there's an option for multiplayer without this Windows Live bullshit.

I have this feeling that MS is going to try and push GFWL instead of letting it stay a failure. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this, Street Fighter IV, or some other upcoming games (Burnout Paradise?) have cross-platform play.
Then again I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. :/ But making it free, and now this seems like they are legitimately trying to push it.

I love the idea of being able to absolutely beat the living crap outta console players online, this alone is a reason to buy. Anyone remember that Quake 3 allowed Dreamcast users to get their arses handed to them on a plate from PC gamers? Oh the fun. How to aim with a control pad? You can't just give up!

Too bad that we'll have to go through that POS GfWL just to play cross-platform multiplayer. It just isn't worth it.

It has a lock on option, but at least on the 360 almost everyone dissables it in the server settings.
And GTA4 mulitplayer is excellent and GFW Live is free now, so there is no reason not to play. I doubt there will be cross platform support though, hardly any developer has bothered to do that.

Yes it has lock-on. However, in regards to the other half of the game, driving, I think you're going to want a gamepad with analog triggers due to the car physics. (which are awesome)
