On Diablo III's Necromancer Cut & Possible Return

Diablo III Designer Explains Why Necromancer Was Cut, Hints At Return on MTV Multiplayer justifies cutting the Necromancer class from the action/RPG sequel, and hints that this may not be a permanent situation: The reason it was cut was because they didn't want to rehash the characters from previous Diablos (the Barbarian returns because they thought they had a new take on the character), but lead designer Jay Wilson indicates this was not a universal opinion, even among the Diablo III developers, so the Necromancer may eventually be, yes, resurrected:

“There’s a lot of people on our team who aren’t happy with our class choices,” he admitted. “But after we’ve established ‘Diablo III’ as its own game with its own type of gameplay and experiences, I wouldn’t be opposed to looking at old classes. We are trying to design [the Witch Doctor] class so that if we did bring back the Necromancer, there’s room for him. We’re looking out ahead of time at what our expansions are going to be, so we’ve got to keep room open for some of those other classes down the road.”

Good point. I think the idea is more like the mind control abilities a Priest has in WOW. Priests don't own the inventory of mind controlled opponents, only their abilities. In other words anything you obtain would go into the Ghostwalker's inventory, not your host's inventory.

I dunno I kind of like the Witchdoctor, that Wall of Zombies is fucking hilarious.

Im pretty sure there will be at least one ranged character, and that its going to be the Rogue. Not the WoW rogue but the Diablo 1 Rogue. (Amazon is definitely a big NO NO since well....who ever saw a male Amazon right?)

Im also pretty sure there will be at lease one pure "caster" class, since the Sorceror was in D1 and the Sorceress in D2, my guess is that they will probably make a return in D3, or they might go for something more exotic like the Horadrim. (or were they too powerfull?)

1 class will be the "Healer" class. Unfortunately. I think there is no avoiding it. The WoW influence is too great.
The cool thing about Diablo is that all the classes could turn into uber powerful builds that in combination with good items would be great DPS dealers. Im kind of hoping they keep that in theory, and dont go the MMO route by gimping certain class dmg potential.

I have a nifty blue line!

Assassin and Druid were simple combinations of previous classes. The Witchdoctor looks to suffer the same malady.

Here's hoping they chose to withhold the interesting classes for a later date. I'd like to see characters more fleshed out for party-based play, and more distinguished classes.

I actually am in favor if they cut 2 or 3 of the 5 classes and bring in something new. As long as the game feels like Diablo when I play it, I'll be happy. Actually I would prefer a Diablo feel to D2, as I much prefered the original. But thats unlikely.

I hope they are not dropping DII classes just because "they've been done".

The assassin was an interesting class to play (and you could tell the WoW rogue was a spiritual successor in the "build charges then finish" style), and my favourite was the paladin (before it got turned in to healadin).

Witch doc and barb both do not appeal to me. Kinda hoping that they do revive some of the DII classes tbh.. =\

As for
because they didn't want to rehash the characters
and
its own game with its own type of gameplay and experiences
, who's kidding who? It's grind for item drops while slaughtering heaps of enemies. Not sure how that is it's own game but *shrug*, we'll see when we see I guess.

Personally I'll all for expansion packs, as long as it doesn't come at the expense of the core game. Spore looks to be a great game out of the box but expansions could adds robot creature types or any host of other content that was never going to be included in the original game. Diablo III is looking stunning as it is - any expansion that seeks to improve upon that is fine by me. It's fine to leave room for another class as long as they're not cutting a class for the sake of it, which doesn't appear to be the case here.

You can find "Jay Wilson" as an NPC out in Netherwing Ledge in WoW..
spelled backwards.. and i think his character is impaled on a spike..

I would like to see a class that lets you inhabit bodies. Once in possession you control the host's strengths and abilities. You could choose between blending into the mob and avoid being attacked (kind of like a Rogue). If you did decide to attack then your survivability would involve jumping into another host before your current host dies.
The problem with that and why we have probably never seen it is that there would be a pretty limited array of gameplay. If you keep jumping from host to host than you lose all items you would have progressed for and have to start from scratch. I would think it would be the same for death as well. It would be like playing hardcore in Diablo in that when you die, you would have to start from scratch.

They're probably just saving it for an expansion... make everyone pay for it.

What? Diablo had three classes. Four, if you count the expansion. They could all essentially do the same things, but there were distinct differences.

"after we’ve established ‘Diablo III’ as its own game with its own type of gameplay and experiences"

The original Diablo didn't have classes.

These statements just go to show you that these guys don't know what they're doing.

Actually, I second PHJF's question. Have they released a class list? Or have they just made it clear that the necromancer isn't in the game?

The name of the class could be called "Ghostwalker"? I don't think a class like this has been done before. It could be cool.

Just throwing out ideas.

The only thing the Necromancer was good at was lagging up the fuckin game. They were okay up to patch 1.09, but 1.10 pretty much sealed it's fate.
