Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath SecuROM Fix

EA Customer support has links to a SecuROM Command and Conquer file to patch version 1.01 of Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath to hopefully address crashing issues caused by the copy protection scheme, where explorer would crash on right-click on program icons and executables. Thanks Ant.

I had this since 7/9/2008 release day, and I was wondering why my Explorer.exe kept crashing with ntdll.dll all the time. Even in safe mode! I lost so many hours of time and stuff.
This is a touching story. Our hearts bleed for you.

This is the reason why almost every game I've picked up in the last year has been either through Steam or Impulse (formerly SDC). Online authentication probably works better at preventing piracy, and you don't have to worry about shit like SecuROM.
Errr... there are quite a number of Steam games that come with additional SecuROM protection. Get a frickin' clue, por favor. kthx.

Once again ppl who buy games get fucked and ppl who pirate games can play them like they should. Seriously why do developers and publisher even wonder why so many pirate pc games? They are basicly asking for trouble using stuff like SecureROM and what not. Morons.

Sorry, SecuROM only makes your OS crash when right-clicking if you are a pirate.

Granted, there are valid concerns with that method, such as tracking and offline boxes but neither are problems for me.

As much as I want to pick up Kane's Wrath for the single player story, I'll continue to pass on it. It's sad too, since I credit the original C&C with getting me into PC gaming.

Someone needs to make an archive, for reference, of every time a gaming company has to release a patch to fix a problem where the anti-piracy software crashes, or otherwise disrupts normal computer operations. That way the next time its announced a new game has some overbearing copy-protection along with it, we can point out to those who claim, 'you have nothing to worry about unless you're a pirate', exactly what the legitimate gamers are so upset about.

EA should do what UBI-Soft did and release a NOCD fix that is pirated from pirates.

One of the reasons why I started to stray from PC gaming. It's sick what they try to get away with today. As others already posted, it does little/nothing to stop piracy and actually drives people to it.

I purchase all of my games and in the coming year can count the PC games I want on one hand, and some of those will be available for OS X.

It's just not worth the hassle.

Why is the copy protection affecting anything when the game isn't running? It looks like it installs as a shell extension, that's a bit invasive isnt it? I thought SafeDisk got hammered because they were using a low-level driver system?

There's a guy troubleshoots his way to determining the KW SecuROM issue at the following, if it's relevant for anyone:

(edit: the forum is screwing the link presentation but it works if you copy paste from the http)

Why does EA think we'll buy C&C: Red Alert 3 after the endless technical issues with the First Decade Collection, C&C3, and Kane's Wrath? Friggn' amateur hour at that company.

The only way to ensure that it will never be an issue is to never use it in the first place.

2. Again! Jul 18, 2008, 12:03 Paketep

And yet again SecuROM proves how dangerous it is to the game AND to the rest of the OS. And how useless it is to protect the game, since it was cracked the same as everyone else.

When the fuck are EA and company going to learn that they are only hurting their customers and themselves?.

Could someone please send the idiot suits the memo personally?. SecuROM DOES NOT protect games. SecuROM DOES NOT avoid piracy. SecuROM CREATES piracy when the customers get fed up and decide not to pay any more money for games that they can't play and/or will crash their OS.

God, I can't believe it. Right-click in a totally unrelated application (and a MS one at that!) crashing the OS because you install a game with SecuROM?. Damned fucking idiots!
