The E3 trailer for Singularity offers the first look at the new game in the
works at Raven Software. The movie doesn't exactly clarify the nature of the
game, but does indicate a technological disaster is somehow involved, though it
is probably not creating an actual gravitational singularity, as event horizons
are not particularly well-suited to gameplay (perhaps it is a
technological
singularity). Anyway, the clip is available on
ActionTrip,
Gamer's Hell, and
Tiscali Games.

The last Raven games that truly impressed me are back from the Hexen/Heretic days. The last Raven game I had some fun with was Soldier of Fortune.
From there, Raven really dug itself into these quick, functional, somewhat bland or basic games. Yes, it is a matter of technical or design pride that they could knock out releases in twelve months or less, but I think the core game aspect really died off.
I'm talking about games that never reached their potential, didn't try anything new or exciting, were fairly derivative, simple, had fairly blatant shortcomings, etc.
From my viewpoint, this really started with Voyager (lots of possibility, totally unfulfilled,) carried over to the Jedi Knight games (not as good as the original, the SW element was more fun than the game,) and through Quake 4 (the ultimate in their generic gaming release.)
They've been toiling away in the Marvel world as of late and I only played one of the early games, but it reminded me of the same stuff. I recall a functional game that was a bit generic, not the most deep or advanced, was heavily focused on the consoles, and had a lot of quirks of shortcomings.
Just look at the replies to this video. I'm able to come up with something a littie more creative than just being F.E.A.R. located on the boat, but neither idea is particularly new. And given the past track record with Raven, I don't expect anything good, but it would be nice to have something good - hence my comment. They're akin to Gearbox Software, just not focused on a single title. Shrugging, Ray

Apart from Heretic and Hexen, I thought JKII was Raven's best effort in "recent" times. I'd even dare to say it was slightly-better-than-average! Countless hours spent dueling over LAN (I could only convince our admin to open up the Blizzard Battle.net ports) at school...lot's of Quake 3, UT, and Urban Terror action too.
I wasn't a huge fan of Jedi Academy.

Eh, I would say S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with a time-controlling (pre and post singularity) component. Slight chance of super powers. Been there, done that. Just wanting Raven to make a good game for once, Ray
