Bungie.net has the abortive
results of their countdown announcing that the timer had been ticking down to an
E3 announcement that they are no longer going to make (thanks nin).
Xbox 360 Fanboy has several updates with a chronology of what happened, one
of them leading to a
Joystiq article with a number of updates as well. In short, it seems the
countdown ended with a teaser related to the Halo Superintendent as shown in
these
screenshots, but this update was then removed with an explanation that plans
for an announcement have been changed by their publisher (subsequently
identified as Microsoft Game Studios). In what may or may not be related news,
Microsoft Confirms That Bungie Is Developing New ‘Halo’ on MTV Multiplayer
has word from MGS's Don Mattrick that the studio is at work on a Halo project
that's neither Halo Wars, nor Peter Jackson's upcoming movie. Here's the
explanation that was posted on Bungie.net in lieu of an announcement:

Subject: E3 Announce
For the last several months, we've been building toward a reveal of something
exciting that Bungie is working on. We were looking forward to sharing that with
our fan community during the week of E3. However, those plans were just changed
by our publisher.
We realize that many of our fans are disappointed by this turn of events;
members of the Bungie team share that disappointment.
When the right time comes, we look forward to sharing this exciting announcement
with you. Until then, we appreciate your continued support and patience.

Well, there's always a small chance this would be non-Halo related (or a Halo game of quality/depth.
In this particular interest, I just HATE the industry's obsession with information trading...and, no, it's not just limited to gaming.
Either talk or shut up. Don't pre-announce announcements of announcements. Be honest with end users - be open, get new ideas, get comments, get input, etc. And in this case, if they got this far, just show me what you have.
Wanting "viral marketing" to die off, too, Ray The old man?

Yes, that was a joke. I didn't have to Google him, and I even know his name is spelled "Shaun." Then the only conclusion is that you're far better in touch with them damn kids than I am, which is pretty sad considering I'm only 21 still.

I guess my question is why do most of you even care anyway? Everyone knows it's Halo related and the vast majority on here like to bash the Halo Franchise like a red headed step child.

I think watching Carrot Top and the soccer mom snowboard was the high point!
I'm assuming your joking, but just to make sure, you know that WASN'T Carrot Top, right? Yes, that was a joke. I didn't have to Google him, and I even know his name is spelled "Shaun."
The soccer mom comment, however, stands (I'm pretty sure she's cut me off at one point in her minivan).... |

The lack of "big" news from E3 points to the fact that the current consoles have already shown us what they can do harware-wise in the games that have already been released. There are limits to what you can do with 256MB's of graphics RAM and 256MB's of system RAM. The always room for innovative game design but that't quite rare when it actually happens.
So, all we are getting this year are sequels and "improved" controllers.
That's fine really. I enjoy my 360 for what it is.

I only ask because I thought the same thing at first, and had to do some googling.

Well, the 360 just had a price cut Are you talking about the $299? That's just until they clear inventory...that's it's back to the regular price w/ a 60 gig drive.

When did giving information to end users, the people you want to buy your product, become such a terrible thing? When the game the PR is for, is so far out that starting hype now will just cause it to be overhyped and overshadow other properties that will be released sooner and you want others to be excited about.
DNF being an extreme example.
I'm not saying I agree with their decision, since I don't know all the details (and neither does the general public).

Well, the 360 just had a price cut and I never assumed $ony would offer one. Granted, they did toss out the 80GB model, but with their ongoing denials, that's just in line with their bait and switch SKU process.
At least for now, in the next year, I don't have a single Wii game I plan on purchasing. I'm fine with them expanding the casual side of things and I'm fine with them pushing the remote in a few silly ways, but there wasn't anything new for me. Even with the acknowledgement of further Zelda/Mario games, I just wanted something new, something different. Animal Planet was the "biggest" game and that, too, is not anything new. Everything else is just a Wii remote-tweaked version of games we've already played. And they want us to all have a board? Along with an adapter to make the remote responsive? Along with a group microphone?
On the 360 front, it's all about GoW2. I'm a little dumbfounded no effort was made to improve the single-player game, but I realize that's not a heavy focus these days. As it stands, there are other games I would rather play online and, having moved, I don't see myself having four people over to play the game in my house. I guess the Final Fantasy announcement is "big" in the PS3 circle, but that just makes it another multi-platform title, negating all/most of the benefit to one system. All the other 360-only titles are basically things we've played before (sequels or rehashes of old ideas.) It just botched the Bungie announcement.
I will say how suprised I was by the focus on external features for Live. The new Dashboard seems like it could still have quite a few issues with access, though it does have better aesthetics. Otherwise, Netflix? Movies? Shows? Online connectivity? Avatars? The puny hard drive of the 360 aside, none of that is terribly new or exciting.
Which kind of leads me to the PS3. MGS4 is still the only game I'm interested in getting the system for, but I still can't convince myself to buy one. If MGS4 does end up migrating to the 360, I may never buy one. There were at least a few more "core" or non-casual games, but not a whole lot. God of War 3 is coming, but not for some time and that isn't new. Resistance and Killzone are just their attempts at shooters (GoW/Halo/Call of Duty.) It's of no interest to me, but it's crazy they still cannot roll out Home. There was little other exclusivity or originality...
If I knew somebody without a single system, barring getting a PC, I might actually suggest purchasing a PS3. Between the Blu-Ray drive and the multi-platform releases, it would not be a bad purchase. However, this really is the year of multi-platform releases, helping make them all equal (or at least the PS3/360.) For both Sony and Microsoft, though they made some great promotional videos, you really could cut and paste the same comments for both of them:
"Multi-platform" "Not exclusive" "Not exclusive" "Multi-platform" "Just their version of CoD/GoW/Halo/Resistance" "Boring" "Not exclusive" "Another sequel" "Just some random online component" "Not a good game" "Available on PC" "Not exclusive" "Casual" "Exclusive, but just like these three other games: XYZ" "Multi-platform" "Multi-platform" "Available on PC" "Will be available on the 360/PS3 in three months."
If somebody has a PC and either a 360 of PS3, they will be able to play 90% of the upcoming games. If you want to play Wii Sports-ified (cute, simple, based on the remote) versions of past Nintendo games, the Wii is for you.
Overall, it's a win for gamers - they can play most games and they aren't forced to get all systems - but the big three companies really failed this year. Additionally, there were no big, fantastic, amazing, innovative games for any platform. It's not an epidemic, but the industry keeps moving toward making every release play the same...
It's kind of funny, too, since some of the titles I am more intested in are from the smaller or lesser known companies. ZOMG NO INDIE DEVELOPMENT IS POSSIBLE! Rambling like always, Ray

I watched all three presentations, and that sums them up perfectly. I especially like the nintendo frame there. I had complicity on chat at the time, and I made some comment about "Nintendo should just hand out $100 bills to everyone there and say they're done."

I think Nintendo actually offered less than M$.
However, Nintendo was more in line with its targetted demographic while M$ made the biggest "Huh?" switch.
I think Sony "won" by default of actually having some games, though it wasn't much of a victory. I feel like MS and Sony both lost, due to no price cut. Thereby handing victory to Nintendo, who didn't produce much either...
Cool announcements all around, but nothing mindblowing...

We're pleased to announce that we'll be making an announcement about our upcoming announcement with an announcement to be announced on the date of announcement.
We are disappointed to announce that today's announcement will only announce that we can't announce anything other than that we have an announcement that we won't announce until a future announcement date.
Really, just STFU until you have something tangible. Otherwise I don't think anyone cares.
