User Interface, the Usability Lab and More on Pirates Of The Burning Sea Vault
transcribes a conversation with Janice Von Itter, a User Experience Researcher
at Flying Lab Software. They discuss her group's role in supporting the MMORPG
by giving voice to players' ideas about game design, testing new features, and
more. Word is they are in the process of deploying a UI "strike team" to
overhaul the game's interface.

They really should've just left out the avatar combat altogether and worked on it longer and maybe release as an expansion in a year. Just used a simple noticeboard system for trading and getting missions etc in ports in the meantime. Agreed ... but perhaps the comparisons to EVE and their Ambulation project would have been too cutting? Personally I like the approach that CCP have taken; create a "basic" sandbox game and build on it as they go. Perhaps FLS could have learned from that ....
.... Avatar-mode aside the open sea, naval combat and economic models are very solid.

Another game hit hard by the "So much potential, but got watered down terribly." bug. Yeah I agree, it would be a small niche to go for but naval battles are appreciated by a lot of people, the crafting economy model is great. Don't fall for the negative posts.
If you like PvP in both economic and ship vs ship settings then this game is really very good.
The bugs in the game are very few (at least for me) and the launch was pretty darn smooth by all accounts.
If you are a solo type player then you will find the game HARD (which is good for some folks). If you are a team player with a group of friends you will find the game the best PvP you've seen in a long time.
Fights are either 6 v 6 or 24 v 24 depending on situation and I can't really go into here. Do not listen to the "Oh it's a gank fest, wahh". As I said, if you are a solo player you will have to be on your toes 24/7 in game IF if you go into the "red circle". You can avoid the circles entirely if you wish.
Give it a shot, the game is good.

I wouldn't call it crappy. The ship combat is pretty good actually. If you like playing games like Pirates! in an MMO type environment then your in luck.
As for expensive, if your running the Station Pass (as I am) it's another game added to the list of ones I have access to ... so meh.
I agree on the land based combat though. It's pretty stilted next to just about every other game out there. Thankfully, it's not why I got the game.

I heavily researched this game while trying to decide whether to buy it or not. I'm a huge fan of Jess Lebow, one of the more prominent participants in the game's creation, and have read every one of his books. I also enjoyed playing the classic Pirates! game(s) so I am familiar with the game's concept. I am also in a state of gaming predicament, since I am at the present time bored and trying to find something to fill the gap until Age of Conan and Warhammer Online. That being said, I thought Pirates of the Burning Sea might be a great choice.
I've read every single gaming publication review, have trolled the game's official forums several times, watched several gameplay videos on Youtube, and even sat down in a recliner at Best Buy and read the entire $20 game guide.
However, I haven't made the leap to purchasing it yet. There are just a few things about the game that make me relatively uneasy. The first, is this FaQ for example. This seems like a "Changes we are making in beta" FaQ rather than a retail FaQ. If I'm only going to be playing this game a couple months until Age of Conan, I don't want to spend it beta testing. Should most of this stuff have already been done? Another thing that disturbs me is what is known as "Avcom" on the game's forums, which stands for Avatar Combat. The game was originally designed around ship combat, but then as almost an afterthough, they threw in melee combat between characters. Every review has lowered the score because of it, there is much confusion on the forums as to how it actually works even from people who've spent dozens of hours doing it, and it looks downright ridiculous. I can't imagine going from combat in other MMORPGs and single player RPGs to PotBS's Avcom. The third and final discrepancy I have at this point is the game's seemingly incredibly repetitive and unexciting nature. Aside from participating more freely in PvP, there doesn't seem to be a significant difference between low levels and high levels. As for the strategically deep naval combat, watching naval combat videos posted on Youtube is a bore, I almost can't even imagine sitting here doing it myself.
All in all, I think I may have to let this game pass, unless something convinces me otherwise in the near future.

Oh man I was excited about this game, got into beta - WTF is with the terrible game breaking avatar combat?
Should've left it out, it ruins the whole experience for me. Imagine all that dev time (although admitedly probably not much because it's shit) spent working on the UI for example? (a basic feature that they should've got right before the game shipped)
They should've gone with improving the (relatively) realistic ship combat and the open sea experience. It already has a decent in-depth crafting system and player made and supported economy model which works well imo.

Just the fact the game is getting an overhaul of any type less then a month after release tells you its total ass.

Did anyone go buy this game when it shipped?
Q: Tell us about the UI Strike Team. We're doing a UI Strike Team starting next week, to overhaul all the UI in the game. Now that it's out we're going to make it way better.
The first thing we're looking at is chat. We're doing a chat overhaul to make it more streamlined because right now people complain about it a lot. We're just going to make some configuration changes and then go from there.
Chat bubbles is one thing we're really gonna try to do and some other things to make people feel more attached to their characters and identify more with the other characters rather than just names on a chat log. There's going to be some focus group testing done with that. When we come up the new systems, we will bring people in to test out the new systems before we launch it into the game. Re-doing the UI would improve this game but it's probably too late.
The whole appeal of this game was ship combat with awesome damage modeling. What you delivered was ship combat with "damage"! Press space bar, K-POW, look at those pink, green, red, and blue damage numbers!!! ARRRR!!! So awesome, press space bar again!!! Holy crap did you see that yellow -48, you tore him a new asshole! And then you threw in really lame sword play. Thanx.
