NVIDIA ForceWare Beta for UT3

NVIDIA's nZone offers a beta ForceWare release that's not offered on the their official website (thanks Gamer's Hell). There are new version 169.28 drivers for Windows XP 32-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit, and Windows Vista 64-bit specifically to address problems running Unreal Tournament III. Word is: "ForceWare Beta Release 169.28 is provided below for customers experiencing issues with the retail version of Unreal Tournament 3. This driver is only recommended as an update for these customers. All other customers are recommended to use the latest WHQL or Beta drivers offered on NVIDIA.com."

I've ran the Omega drivers in the past for ATI but never did any benchmarks.

What I can say as that I just built an older system for a friend and I wanted the drivers+functionality of the Catalyst Control Centre without the combined resource piggishness of .NET and said CCC. It's almost a 90MB hit.

The Omegas give you lots of options without the hassle.

Plus they don't make you 'uncheck' EarthSim, then select 'Custom' and uncheck all of the free 'game offers'.

Sometimes I wonder if they flood their own market. UT 2004 seems to be doing much better than this stats wise so it kind of splits the community a bit. I still want to grab it though. Love a good, fast paced deathmatch.

Been running those new Omega drivers & they seem to be a bit faster than what Nvidia offers. I like them & there VERY stable.
how can you tell the speed increase? are there any benchmarks proving it, or is the fps jump just psychological?
the omega guy claims he's not a programmer, then how did he manage such a noticeable feat?

UT3 is a very good game. It's quite surprising to me that it has sold so poorly. Sure it's no Team Fortress 2 but it's still a blast.

CPU upgrade? Check. Graphics upgrade? Not sure. I can wait for DX11 or grab a second 4870 now... or do both. Hmmm. Sunny

Thanks nVIDIA. Glad to see nV support for UT3 and all the other games. UT3 is a great futuristic/arcade-ish multiplayer FPS. If you like multiplayer FPS games, give it a try!

aww, look at the poor little kiddies talking about UT3. Newsflash: The community is plenty large enough to find any game of any type you wish, it's getting larger every day, and it's one of the most scalable games out there that runs well on any system from the last 3-4 years. Take your heads out of your asses.

But do these drivers actually do anything like that? From what I've seen the releases generally just add a few FPS or so to some benchmarks.

Don't touch these drivers. I just tried it on VISTA-64. Slowed me down to a crawl. Going back to released version.
FYI.

Can someone explain to me why specific game tweaks are needed in a driver? Wasn't one of the points of standards like DX(x) and OpenGL to prevent game specific coding?
No software or standard is perfect. Drivers have bugs. UT3 may use features that have not been exposed and prodded as much. UT3 may be doing something heavily that's incurring a large speed hit whereas in other games a similar effect is used sparingly.

I highly doubt all these beta drivers are game-specific coding, aka if ($game == UT3) { do this optimization } but rather improving card features. There's a lot that can go wrong.

It's a shame Omega doesn't support Vista64 as I don't even have the opportunity to test whether they are better. I used them with ATi a while back but they usually came out quite late and offered little, if anything, in performance gains.
