As promised, a single-player demo is now available for Rise of Nations: Rise of
Legends, providing a scaled-down sample of Big Huge Games' upcoming real-time
strategy offering. The demo debuted on
GameSpot (registration required), where they provide the following warning: "This is an
unfinished version of Rise of Legends, and you may encounter bugs and other
issues like long scenario load times along the way." Mirrors of the 620 MB demo
can be found on on

I've actually had the same problem with the demo. I get a graphics warning saying something like 'no valid technique.' If I hit 'retry', the game closes. If I hit 'ignore', the same error message pops up for every single graphic in the game. When I've finally 'ignored' them all, then the game closes anyway. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?
Thanks,
Skeet

Is there a way to play this demo on win2k? When I try to install, I get an error message because I don't have XP installed.

Does it hsve the PAUSE FUNCTION?? Yes, you can pause and issue commands. And to whoever asked about stacking build queues, you could do that in the original Rise of Nations as well. There were a few others that did this also. Battlecry was one.. Age of Mythology perhaps?.. Don't need it here, since, as already mentioned, there are no builders. As for calling this a C&C knockoff.. if anyone actually thinks that, they need to scrape out the bong resin. RoL and C&C are as about as different as RTS games can get.

Yeah that's what I was trying to get by xero... That this is actually much less complicated and complex then RoN thus giving off more of that WC3 feel that you guys crave but at the same time leaving the vast tech options and territory/city building that I love. Greta game.

"Going by that wouldn't be a good idea. I liked WC3 and SC but didn't like any Civ games. I also liked Ground Control and Warhammer. I don't know what lamp is.
Therefore, you'd be better off going by your own opinion after playing the demo. I'm sure you can spare 5 minutes of download time. "
Yeah, I actually decided to download it about 10 minutes after I posted that, on further looking of the screen shots. Went in with a just wanna see the graphics deal. Surprised it's actually quite fun. Although the graphics are very nice, they killed my comp after I had a large sized city built. The units are decent looking, although get better as they get bigger. That giant walking spider tank leviathan thingy is very impressive. I didn't care much for RoN though this one has my interest. I'll think about it as I try the demo abit more. It reminds me of C&C, Wc3, and just your typical RTS game all in one.

Does it hsve the PAUSE FUNCTION??
I've never played ANY RTS's until I tried RON. But the pause function can turn any difficult click-fest into a playable game. And any difficult decisions can be analyzed and that's part of the fun.

For a bit of perspective:
I hate WarCraft 3 I hated ground combat on Star Wars Empire at War I hated Star Craft [GASP]
I love the AoE's I love the Civs I love RoN I love lamp.
Going by that, you just saved me 5 minutes of download time. Thank you.

I would have fiquired the sounds would have been the first things done. Why would you wait till end of beta to finish them up?
Sound is usually one of the last things that goes into a game.

Don't wait if this is the type of game you enjoy Ant. I and a few other think the game is amazing. Those complaining about it aren't making it clear that they just don't enjoy this type of RTS. Ask me if I think Barbie Horse Adventures is a good game and I'll say no. Ask my 6 year old girl cousin about it and she'll tell you it's the pinnacle of ingenuity. I think RoN:Rol is great and I am getting almost a full games worth of fun just from this demo.

Never was a fan of RTS games: single-player RTS games get repetitive fast.
