NFS: Most Wanted Announced

EA announces Need for Speed: Most Wanted, the next installment in the racy series, which is slated for release on PC, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, and PSP in November:

EA ANNOUNCES NEED FOR SPEED MOST WANTED

A New Racer Hits the Streets This November from the Creators of the Critically Acclaimed Need for Speed Underground Series

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – April 11, 2005 – Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced today that Need for Speed™ Most Wanted, from the makers of the hit Need for Speed™ Underground franchise that has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, currently is under development at EA Canada. Combining the thrill of illicit street racing and tuner customization with the intensity of strategic police pursuits that rivals any Hollywood-style chase scene, Need for Speed Most Wanted challenges players to become the most notorious and elusive street racer.

“Out-race your opponents, evade cops and exploit the open world in Need for Speed Most Wanted; street racing doesn’t get any better than this,” said Larry LaPierre, senior producer, EA Canada. "Players instantly will feel the thrill of the ride as they hit the streets in an open world environment where drivers can tune their cars to compete against any class of vehicles or use their wits to out-fox the law to satisfy their need for speed.”

Need for Speed Most Wanted delivers a unique, fast-paced and gripping ride in the racing genre as players build up their Rap Sheet and street cred to move their way up the Black List to become the most wanted racer on the streets. Players will go head-to-head with the top drivers on the scene as well as strategically evade more than half dozen cops at any one time. Add in a dynamic open world, new gameplay and customization as well as tuners, supercars, muscles and sports cars and Need for Speed Most Wanted will be on every gamer’s “must-have” list.

Developed in Vancouver, B.C. by EA Canada, Need for Speed Most Wanted will be available for a next generation console as well as the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Xbox® videogame system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube™, Nintendo DS™, Game Boy® Advance, PSP™ handheld entertainment system and PC. More details to follow.

Gamers also can participate in the Need for Speed Most Wanted Custom Car Vinyl Design Contest* to have their own custom vinyl considered for possible inclusion in the upcoming game. I love drift.
I love drag.

Burnout is great, but the feel was very different.

I still say 3 was one of the best two-player racers on the PC. I agree, the feel has been lost as the series tries to be "cool."

I'd echo everyone else's notions for a return to the open air (and less cluttered roads) of the older games. Dodging traffic can be OK now and then, but it gets frustrating. Although there is an option to turn it off, you still never get that "flat out" feeling while constantly dodging around city streets.

I personally hate Drift mode, and always set it to easy just so I can get it over with. I'd say make Drifting a whole seperate career so most of us don't have to be annoyed by it.

And how about some racing in daylight? It just might be crazy enough to work. Constantly racing at night is really taxing on the eyes.

I always thought the point of Need For Speed was to have stupidly dangerous 2 player races against the traffic, and then find new and amusing ways to ram the other guy into it.

But I guess Burnout has taken that crown now.......

Just wondering...is there any platform that EA *won't* port their current series too? With the next iteration, will they be adding C64 and OS/2 support?

As for the series...the first three games were great (I still play the original from time to time, 'cause I loves me some Dodge Viper), but the Underground games were IMO a step in the wrong direction. People love driving fast cars on nice stretches of road, not buying crappy cars, upgrading them, and dodging through crosstown traffic all the time. The drift mode, one of the few highlights of NFSU, also seemed to be bashed repeatedly with a suck hammer in NFSU2. The sad thing is, there's not really anything recent and comparable for PC, which could be a symptom of rehash-itis. Someone give me powerful cars, open road, and decent MP...give me back the fun.

MCO had great potential, but definitely lost it.

The game became geared towards single player over multiplayer, as more people seemed to do time trials with no real fear of damage.

Upgrading also became too predictable. I would have rather random parts you needed to experiment with than fixed parts that everyone knew and therefore sought out predefined combinations.

It needed "unique items," haha.

High Stakes 4 life. Or something.

Also missing the lush non-urban environments...

I liked some of the Need For Speed games

And the phrase “need for speed” became un-cool in the 1980’s…

But seriously, let “need for speed” die and get another damn title already, especially since they are nothing like the original NFS(S) except for the simple fact that it is “car” racing (and I say “car” loosely).

Porsche Unleashed was pretty good. Easily the high point of the NFS franchise. I wish they'd take the classic musclecar concept they wasted on NFS Online and apply it to a single player game. I can't bring myself to try any of the Underground series. Tooling around in a Puegeot 206 or VW Golf that needs spinning rims to improve my "street cred"? Not for me, thanks.

3 was the pinnacle.

Great replay, great split-screen multiplayer.

I dug underground and underground 2, even finished underground, but I get tired of them. I think the SUV aspect really hurt the last one, I wasn't certain if I should bother with it or not, and they drove horribly.

Give me damage modeling, take away the invisible walls, and I'll be happy.

All the "modding" of the cars is ridiculous, but gets to be fun when your car keeps getting uglier and uglier and uglier.

Is there any way I can play NFS3 under XP? That was the best of all the NFS imo and would love to play it again.

"Need for Speed Most Wanted will be available for a next generation console"

I'm guessing they mean Xbox 2

Jesus, can we stop saying "bling bling" it's 2005.

I think they went in the right direction with the open environment of the last title. The drag racing is a lot of fun as well. I don't like the drifting though, it just sucks or I suck at it. The AI could use an overhaul... From a design standpoint I understand why they use rubberband AI but it sucks.

I've been a fan of the NFS since NFS2, and I'm still playing NFSU2. I don't mind that they keep continuing the series, because I just like the arcadish feel of it all. I do miss the more exotic cars, and the country side tracks that the new versions seem to lack though.

2. NFS3 Apr 11, 2005, 11:32 ViRGE

I really wish they would just remake NFS3 with better graphics, and call it a day. They keep trying to redo parts of it(NFS6: Hot Pursuit 2, NFS9: Most Wanted), but they keep getting farther and farther away from the driving style(power sliding all the time sucks, as does being stuck in a city the whole time) and the cars become less and less meaningful with all the "bling bling" they keep adding. The game just keeps getting worse and worse, and the cumulative ratings for the NFS series shows it(each title is scoring below NFS3, and often below their immediate predecessor too).

PS Don't even get me started on the blatent advertising in the game

When was the last time EA actually released something that was not a sequel to something? Ie, when they released something even marginally original?

Does anything even change between the NFS games anymore? Or is it just a few new circuits and two new cars, and voila, another gold master?
