Sniper Elite 3 in June; Preorders Begin

The Rebellion Gamestore now offers preorders of Sniper Elite 3 at a 20% discount off of full price, saying the sharpshooting sequel is expected to be released on June 27th. Preorders also get an exclusive bonus mission, "Target Hitler: Hunt the Grey Wolf," which students of history will recall, Hitler completed on his own like the griefer he was. Here's the included description of the game:

The latest chapter in the award-winning series, Sniper Elite 3 takes players to the unforgiving, yet exotic terrain of WW2’s North Africa conflict, in a battle against a deadly new foe.

Equipped with Tiger tanks and the latest weaponry, Germany’s infamous Afrika Korps have the Allies outnumbered and outgunned. Worse still, intelligence indicates that the Nazis are developing a super weapon that could destroy all hopes of victory, not just in Africa, but for the whole war.

It must end here. You are the turning point. Because one bullet can change history...

Abyss Odyssey Details & Trailer

The reveal trailer is now online for Abyss Odyssey, the upcoming game from ACE Team. As promised, this is accompanied from first details on the game, which will be a Roguelike-like action/adventure. Here's word:

Abyss Odyssey is an action/adventure platformer that borrows several elements from the Roguelike sub-genre. The game features a variety of unique characteristics, and in this first reveal trailer we’re talking about three key features the game will have to offer:

  • Randomized environments: Every descent into the Abyss will be completely different thanks to the dynamic modular environments built off hundreds of set pieces and the randomized distribution of enemies and collectibles. Players will see how enemy classes, secret areas, loot and all other sort of interactive elements are distributed differently with each pass at the campaign.
  • Deep fighting engine: With Abyss Odyssey we set out to develop an action platformer that boosts a fighting engine that is easy to play, but has a high learning curve that can be mastered to output pro techniques traditionally seen in the fighting game genre. This feature is built around not only the players, but most of the enemies as well. So instead of a list of regular NPCs the game essentially features a roster of ‘fighters’ that can perform a variety of specialized combat techniques such as cancelling into specials, parrying attacks, custom combos, etc.
  • Play as the enemies: Since most of the enemies in the game have a level of depth comparable to the player characters, we developed a special powerup that allows players to capture enemy souls which allows them to later turn into the enemies and play the campaign as those. Being able to play as dozens of different characters adds a huge level of diversity to the game, since each enemy features it’s unique moveset and special attacks. Enemy transforms will also be accessible through other means like secret shops and a specialized training room.

The previous three features are just a portion of the unique things we’re including into Abyss Odyssey. There’s a handful of additional features that will be revealed in upcoming videos. We’ll be slowly unveiling everything about Abyss Odyssey as we come closer to the release which is during 2014.

World of Tanks Video Diary

This video kicks off a new series of developer diaries for World of Tanks, showing off what Wargaming has planned for the free-to-play tank shooter over the course of this year. These plans include a revamp of the game's physics system, which is the subject of today's diary, as they promise "a deeper dive into how the revamped system will allow for a more realistic, immersive combat experience." Child of Light Trailer

OnLive Undead: Announces New Services

Cloud gaming service OnLive has apparently survived its near death experience a little under a year ago, announcing CloudLift and OnLive Go, kicking off a new business model:

OnLive's new CloudLift subscription works by linking the player's game library with his or her OnLive account and syncing cloud saves automatically. Players can play games locally on their gaming PC when they're at home, or sign into OnLive on any device when on the go, and continue the same game right where they left off, no matter where they are. This gives gamers instant access to the full game experience on multiple platforms, even those on which the game is not normally supported, such as tablets, lightweight laptops, Macs, TVs with the OnLive Game System or the VIZIO® Co-Star, or on the LG Google TV. The CloudLift subscription works with supported games purchased from any digital download retailer and fully supports multiplayer gaming, so even titles without cloud saves benefit. To complement the CloudLift service, OnLive will also sell download codes. Purchase of a download code from OnLive will include a 7-day free trial of CloudLift, which makes OnLive the only digital download retailer that offers cloud play as an added benefit to game purchase.

Valve Reddit Interview

The WeAreA videogame developer AUA! - IAmA with Gabe Newell on Reddit is now online following an odd false start for the interview. The conversation with the Valve honcho includes assists from Erik Wolpaw, Erik Johnson, Ido Magal, and "Coomer" (we're thinking Greg, not Christen), with topics covering Linux support, possible Steam Music integration with other services, and even a reference to Half-Life 3 Ricochet 2: "When we announced our products years in advance in the past and then were really late delivering them, it was pretty painful for both us and the community," explains Gabe. "We'd rather not repeat that."

More on Croteam's New IP

Seriously! has a bit of a follow-up to the recent report of a new IP in the works at Serious Sam developer Croteam. They have an outline of what Croteam is up to from CEO Roman Ribaric that includes a little more on the still-unannounced project: "Roman described it to us as a mixture between Portal and The Witness, which would make it a first-person adventure puzzle game. And according to Jubert this new game is going to have a type of humor that is very different from Serious Sam. This game is also slated for 2014 but with no specific time frame."

Qvadriga and Demo Released

Matrix Games announces the release of Qvadriga along with a playable demo of this celebration of the chariot racing that highlighted the clown-free circuses of the Roman empire. Word is: "This action-packed tactical game will also call upon your management skills to lead your team along the Grand campaign. 43 historically modelled circuses, seven Mediterranean regions to travel, 6 historic factions, and an extended customization system to upgrade your equipment and drivers ensures you experience an unforgettable sporting moment!" Here's more:

Qvadriga, the tactical game of chariot racing in ancient Roman circuses is now ready for you to buy! Take control of a four horse chariot team, choose your preferred upgrade combinations and acquire fame throughout the empire.

If gladiators entertained audiences in ancient times by their violent confrontations with other fighters and wild animals, some of the most thrilling and fascinating moments of the Roman Ludi were probably the chariot races. Only the strongest and most skilled drivers were able to successfully take the reins of the quadrigas, the four-horses chariots designed to reach very high speeds.

In Qvadriga, you will be able to relive the excitement and the passion of the Roman circuses. Alternating between driver and team manager roles, you will try to dominate your opponents in the arena, and set up a team of champions to win the most prestigious contests of the Ancient World. The advanced AI will not hesitate to throw a spanner in the works by whipping your drivers to death and breaking your chariots.

Out of the Blue

I mentioned those crazy KFC ads recently in my role as occasional amateur media critic, but the round of spots from the colonel has gotten weirder since we talked about the fake food bloggers and tweaker mom. They have now introduced stupefied by pot pie guy, who says "pot pie" nine times in 30 seconds if you count the time he mouths it. He does not come off as the sharpest of tacks, unless you compare him to insane chicken wings man, who asks his friends "what's the main problem in the world today," only to reply "no" to their suggestions, one of which is actually "war." He explains that the biggest problem in the world is "imposter chicken wings," noting that you wouldn't go to the car wash to get your teeth fixed. The thing about that is, the angle of the camera seems to intentionally show off that he apparently does have his teeth fixed at the car wash.
