Op Ed

NYTimes.com - Game Theory: Exploring Meaningful Violence.
Instead of feeling transformative or powerful, however, violence in BioShock Infinite felt gratuitous. Why, I wondered toward the end, am I endlessly pumping rockets into the screaming, magically levitating ghost of my sidekick’s mother? Why must every room fill with fleets of replicant bad guys I am forced to kill with a spinning hookblade? Am I supposed to find this horrifying, or cool? I felt inundated with so much ridiculous, anonymous shooting that it was difficult for me to care about any of it.

Out of the Blue

Well it's that time of year again, as yesterday I fired up a batch of my world-famous (self-promotion counts, right?) Texas-style chili. Early indications are this turned out pretty good, though my plan to make it a bit milder was only so successful, and I think I'm just going to give up on making a more user-friendly version. I guess that's not the greatest tragedy: it's not like super-mild chili makes any more sense than super-spicy applesauce. Cavete comedentis! Biter beware!

Battlefield 4 China Ban?

ZDNet reports that Battlefield 4 is being banned in China, though the PCGames.com.cn story cited as the source of this does not seem to exist at this time. A prior report they link is still online, however, reflecting the Chinese military's concerns at how the country is portrayed in the military shooter sequel, as the game's is set in 2020 with unrest in China and possible resulting revolution being integral to the plot. According to ZDNet, the apparently deleted story stated Battlefield 4 "smears China's image" and was a new form of "cultural invasion." Thanks Techie News.

Homeworld HD/CE Survey

Gearbox Software is conducting a Homeworld Survey to poll the community for opinions on how they should deal with their recently acquired IP for the space strategy series. The survey starts with general gaming questions and then drills into Homeworld, investigating awareness of the franchise before introducing the Homeworld HD concept and gauging how much gamers might be willing to pay for an updated version of Relic's first installment in the series. They also question whether there is interest in a Collector's Edition, how much such a collection would be worth, and what items it could include to inspire your purchase. They also ask similar questions about willingness to buy a Homeworld art book. Thanks nin via Polygon.

The Repopulation Kickstarter; March Testing Plans

A new Kickstarter is underway for The Repopulation seeks $50,000 for the completion of this sandbox MMORPG, coinciding with the launch of a new Steam Greenlight campaign for the project. The accompanying news is of plans to conduct another round of testing in March 2014:

Above and Beyond Technologies has announced that the upcoming MMORPG will be entering the next round of testing in March 2014. This round will also mark the beginning of beta preview weekends for the game's backers. All Closed Beta Round 1/Guaranteed Beta backers will be receiving at least one invite during this round of testing, with Beta Preview backers receiving at least two weekend invites, and Beta Preview+ backers receiving access to each of these events.

As a small token of our appreciation, all backers from The Repopulation's previous Kickstarter campaign will be granted Closed Beta Round 1 access, along with at least one Beta Preview weekend invite.

Out of the Blue

Well, last week I did the thing I told myself I wouldn't, and made a few extra-daring NFL picks in our Beat the Insiders league to increase the chances of some wild comeback. How did that work out for me? Well, I thought my picks did poorly when I was playing it straight, but my attempt to hit some longshots was even worse. I'll have to pull off a pretty spectacular slate of bad picks this week to manage to slide into dead last place, but I think I've proven that this season I'm up to the task. It's actually also possible for me to end up in first place, though this requires me going 16-0 this week and the four players tied for first all going 0-16, so I don't think I'll bother clearing a space for the championship trophy just yet.
