Black Ops 2 Microtransactions and Free Nuketown Map Next Month?

It looks like microtransactions may be soon coming to the PC edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 DLC page has an entry for personalization packs and other new items, which has this link which is currently returning an error, but according to Black Ops 2 Blog revealed plans to start offering these appearance packs (camouflage, reticles, and more) to PC and PS3 players on April 12th (they are already being sold in the Xbox 360 edition of the shooter sequel). They say the preorder bonus Nuketown 2025 map will be released to all for free at that time as well. Thanks PCGamesN via VG247.

Divinity: Original Sin Kickstarter

A Kickstarter campaign is now underway for Divinity: Original Sin, Larian Studios' upcoming RPG set in their Divinity universe. The game was announced almost a year ago, and now they seek $400K to expand their team and finish the project. Here's word amidst the inevitable Kickstarter rambling: "Today we are nearing the end of our development cycle and when we look at what we've created so far, we think that we have in our hands the best RPG Larian Studios has ever created. But, we also have the feeling that our job isn't done yet. The game systems we put in place have a lot of potential and because it took us quite some time to create them, we haven't been able to use them to their fullest yet. "

Arena of Heroes Beta Weekend

Zattikka announces this weekend they will offer open beta testing of Arena of Heroes, an upcoming cross-platform free-to-play MOBA game for Windows, OS X, and iOS. Those who enjoy the game will have the opportunity to continue playing the beta after the weekend by purchasing one of the founder's packages. Word is: "Launching in Q2 2013 simultaneously on iOS, PC and Mac, Arena of Heroes will bring MOBA battle strategy and cross-platform competitive play to gamers when they want and where they want, both in real-time and asynchronously. Players can choose from a variety of unique heroes to form their team of four to go to the Tower Apex Arena and battle their opponents. Arena of Heroes is free to play, but players will be able to upgrade their experience by customizing heroes sooner and accelerating their level up time."

XCOM Shooter Getting Rebranded?

A new superannuation post on Kotaku notes that Take-Two registered a bunch of domains last week and suggests this may indicate a rebranding of the planned XCOM shooter that everyone was complaining was a planned XCOM shooter, since that bastardizes a beloved strategy franchise. The new domains would seem to fit the game's setting: thebureau-game.com, thebureau-game.net, whathappenedin62.com, and whathappenedin62.net. They also mention recent indications that this may end up a third-person game, rather than a first-person shooter.

Battlefield 4 Gameplay Trailer; Preorder Bonus DLC

This "Fishing in Baku" trailer (NSFW) offers the promised full reveal for Battlefield 4, saying the next installment in DICE's military first-person shooter series is due this fall. Starting with a cinematic which seems to have a "no Russian" Kobayashi Maru quality, the 17+ minute clip then shows how this scenario came to be, segueing to gameplay footage showing hyper-realistic indoor and outdoor environments, stealth, sniping, destructible environments, vehicles, lots of flanking (by the player, if not the enemies), lots of seagulls, lots of puddles, the ability to shake off being shot by a few rounds from a mini-gun and having an entire factory collapse on you, a little field surgery, the Battlefield version of the G-Man, and more. It's apparent this is shot using the PC edition of the game, seemingly confirmed by screen prompts absent of references to those colorful little buttons that don't appear on your keyboard. The game is now being offered for preorder, which entitles purchasers to a free premium expansion pack. The preorder page also offers a few details:

Battlefield 4™ is the genre-defining action blockbuster made from moments that blur the line between game and glory. Fueled by the next-generation power and fidelity of Frostbite™ 3, Battlefield 4™ provides a visceral, dramatic experience unlike any other.

Only in Battlefield can you demolish the buildings shielding your enemy. Only in Battlefield will you lead an assault from the back of a gun boat. Battlefield grants you the freedom to do more and be more while playing to your strengths and carving your own path to victory.

In addition to its hallmark multiplayer, Battlefield 4™ features an intense, dramatic character-driven campaign that starts with the evacuation of American VIPs from Shanghai and follows your squad's struggle to find its way home.

There is no comparison. Immerse yourself in the glorious chaos of all-out war, found only in Battlefield.

Star Wars: The Old Republic APAC Servers Closing

EA is planning on closing down the Asia/Pacific servers for Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare's Star Wars MMORPG. This forum post has word from community manager Eric Musco saying "everyone wants the opportunity to play on higher populated servers." He explains why they decided to merge the three APAC servers with the North American servers, rather than into a single APAC server, saying: "The move to North American servers better delivers on our ultimate goal of providing the best play experience, with the most possible players, long term." Thanks TORWars.

Dawn of Fantasy Dawns Next Week

Reverie announces an official release date for Dawn of Fantasy, saying their RTS game will be released on April 1st, adding "and, no, this is not an early April Fool's Day joke" (acknowledging and simultaneously ignoring the fact that real game news is as inappropriate on that date as fake news). They offer a new trailer showing off the game, and the following explanation of what to expect:

Toronto, Canada – 27/03/2013 Indie MMORTS game Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars will soon become the latest 'Greenlit' title to be released on Steam. Since the game was voted onto Steam by the game playing community back in November through Steam's Greenlight project, Dawn of Fantasy's developer Reverie World Studios has been working hard on adding various new features in time for the Steam release. Now, after working with Valve, the release date for Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars has been set as April 1st 2013, and, no, this is not an early April Fool's Day joke.

"All of us at Reverie are thrilled about this latest move and are grateful for the support of Valve and the Steam community," stated Executive Producer Konstantin Fomenko, "Release on the Steam platform will be an important next step in our continuous development of this indie game."

A new trailer for Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars has been released ahead of the game's launch on Steam. Featuring all in-game footage, this trailer shows off some of the new features and visual improvements that we added to Dawn of Fantasy over the past several months. In addition this trailer gives players preview of features still to come - like Naval Combat and Magic.

Tomb Raider Patched

Steam news has details on a new patch for the Windows edition of Tomb Raider we failed to note when it was released on Monday (thanks VG247). Here are the patch notes, which mention increasing the number of saved game slots and a bunch of DirectX 11 fixes, as well as the availability of a separate beta patch: Continue here to read the full story.

Watch Dogs Trailer

The Watch Dogs website now offers a new trailer called "ctOS Threat Monitoring Report," offering a look at Ubisoft's upcoming hacking game through the eyes (or lenses, rather) of the Central Operating System (ctOS). Here's how this works: "Players will assume the role of Aiden Pearce, a new type of vigilante who, with the help of his smartphone, will use his ability to hack into Chicago’s ctOS and control almost every element of the city. Aiden will be able to tap into the city’s omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control systems such as traffic lights or public transportation to stop a chase, and more. The city of Chicago is now the ultimate weapon." Continue here to read the full story.

Battle Worlds: Kronos Funded; New Trailer

The Kickstarter page for Battle Worlds: Kronos shows that this project has reached its funding goal just a week after launching. They have added the ability to support them through Paypal, and offer a new trailer with a cinematic tease for this upcoming turn-based strategy game. Continue here to read the full story.

New APB Game Kickstarter

A new Kickstarter holds out its hand for cash to develop All Points Bulletin (APB): Vendetta, a new "Extreme Agility Shoot-and-Slash FPS with unique fighting-game inspired characters, and “easy-to-mod” server tools" (thanks IGN). As the title implies, this is a spin off of APB Reloaded, the resurrected version of All Points Bulletin, the high-profile open-world project that was resurrected by Reloaded Productions after the game killed developer Realtime Worlds. Here's word on the Kickstater:

APB Vendetta is a character-driven extreme mobility competitive shooter, inspired by the APB Reloaded universe, built on an entirely new high-agility game system featuring; extreme movement mechanics, melee combat, dual wield weapons, character-specific finishing moves, a fighting-game ethos, customizable private servers, modding tools and an upgraded game engine using the latest (2013) version of Unreal3.

APB Vendetta is a buy-to-play game where players receive all guns, characters and game affecting items upfront, with optional monthly server rentals for on-demand managed and modded servers. If you already play APB Reloaded, then APB Vendetta can connect to its predecessor and you can share “Premium Account Status” between the two games. One long-term stretch goal includes expansive tools to export non-game-play affecting visual customized items from APB Reloaded to APB Vendetta as part of future mod and ops toolkits. By backing our Kickstarter you empower us to create this separate dedicated development team expanding the APB universe.

Out of the Blue

Yesterday I paid the price for having found this article explaining why it is not a good idea to use the self-cleaning feature on your oven because it can actually break the oven, even when used as intended. This lead to me cleaning the oven by hand, which is a messy job, though not nearly as bad as I imagined. There are also a number of articles on the internet suggesting it may not be healthy to breath around an oven in self-cleaning mode, but since my "manual" cleaning relied on a can of nasty Easy-Off oven cleaner, I doubt that I'm ahead on that part of the deal, but at least the oven is clean.
