Ships Ahoy - Alien Spidy

Alien Spidy is now available for Windows and OS X on Steam (as well as on consoles), with the Steam edition on sale for 15% off for the first week. Here's the launch trailer, and here's word:

Developed by Enigma Software, Alien Spidy is a single-player action-platformer that delves deep into the world of a technologically advanced alien spider whose space ship crashes on earth while searching for his lost friend Virgi. Alone on the alien planet “Spidy” sets out to find his friend, but also needs to collect the lost parts of his crashed space ship, whilst avoiding the unfriendly local inhabitants. Spidy must overcome the many obstacles he encounters by using clever web-swinging mechanics as he explores wildly interactive and colourful environments brought to life with beautifully smooth animations.

Saints Row 4 CE Survey

Star Trek: The Video Game Gorn Trailer

This new video from Star Trek: The Video Game offers a second "making of" clip on the upcoming co-op action game based on the Trekkie reboot movies. The clip introduces the Gorn who act as the antagonists in the game, and we see lots of combat, though no one fashions any gunpowder (nor a rudimentary lathe, for that matter). "When we started development on the game more than three years ago, one of the first decisions we had to make was: Who was the enemy?" says the game’s executive producer, Brian Miller. "The Gorn immediately jumped to the top of the list. And now, as gamers and fans ourselves, we couldn’t be more excited to bring one of the most popular and iconic science fiction villains of all time to the video-game space." Guncraft Trailer

A new trailer offers a look at gameplay from Guncraft, the voxel-powered PC shooter in development at Exato Game Studios. Word is: "Guncraft players can create arenas and levels based on anything they can think of, and once complete, utilize these stages for a fast-paced shooter. Players have all of the standard multiplayer shooter modes such as Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, plus tons of custom loadouts, perks, plenty of weapons, vehicles and more. Even better, the core crafting mechanics of Guncraft are available in all game modes, enabling players to build maps, characters, and weapons on the fly, then decimate them all to take down enemies." Also, attendees of this weekend PAX East are invited to stop by Reverb Publishing’s booth to play the game and gain access to an exclusive character skin. Continue here to read the full story.

Steam Opens Early Access

Steam announces a new Early Access games on Steam program, highlighting games being offered in prerelease form:

March 20, 2013 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the addition of an Early Access section to Steam's library of over 2,000 titles.

Steam Early Access titles allow the community to get involved early and play select titles during their development. The goal of Early Access is to provide gamers with the chance to "go behind the scenes" and experience the development cycle firsthand and, more importantly, have a chance to interact with the developers by providing them feedback while the title is still being created.

To support the interaction between Early Access players and developers, Steam offers easy and automatic updating of games, letting developers iterate quickly to respond directly to bug reports and feedback from customers. And, like all Steam games, Early Access players will be able to interact with other players, making it easy to create and share screenshots, tips, and in-depth guides.

"A lot of games are already operating as ongoing services that grow and evolve with the involvement of customers and the community," said Sean Pollman of Badland Studio. "Greenlight helped us raise awareness for Kinetic Void, and now Steam Early Access will let us continue the development of our game while gathering crucial feedback, input and support from the steam Community."

The first titles coming to Steam Early Access are:

  • 1... 2... 3... KICK IT! (Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby)
  • Arma 3
  • Drunken Robot Pornography
  • Gear Up
  • Gnomoria
  • Kenshi
  • Kerbal Space Program
  • Kinetic Void
  • Patterns
  • Prison Architect
  • StarForge
  • Under the Ocean

No Plans for Single-Player Tomb Raider Expansions

This reddit thread is the outcome of an AMA session with Crystal Dynamics attended by Karl Stewart, Global Brand Director for Tomb Raider and Noah Hughes, Creative Director for Tomb Raider. As noted on Videogamer, they were asked along the way about the possibility of single-player DLC for the new Tomb Raider reboot, which they shot down. "There are currently no plans in place for any Single Player expansions," said Karl Stewart. "All of our DLC is based around the Multiplayer experience for now." They also seem to rule out throwback appearance DLC as well. "We did try to have a lot of nods to the classics in this reboot," says Hughes. "And even her outfit itself is intended to evoke her classic outfit in a way, but is more practical for her situation. This was just an example of trying to play that balance between fresh and familiar."

Two DLC Packs Announced for SC: WWII Global Conflict

Battlefront.com announces plans for Assault on Communism and Assault on Democracy, two new DLC packs for Strategic Command: WWII Global Conflict, their large-scale strategy game. The add-ons will bring new features and campaigns along with all the enhancements from the previously released Gold edition. The packs are said to be in parallel development, with the release of Assault on Communism expected within the next 6-8 weeks and Assault on Democracy to follow 6-8 weeks later. Word is: "A range of new major campaigns, both historical and "alternate history" variations, are available, focusing on different elements of the 1939-1945 timeframe for each pack."

Repopulation Teaser Trailer

Out of the Blue

Well happy spring to those in the northern hemisphere, and condolences about the beginning of autumn to those below the equator. The equinox was at 11:02 UTC (7:02 am EDT), and just for extra authenticity, that is the time right now as I type these words. The now-ended winter was not too horrible, but as noted yesterday, it was long, to the extent that there's still snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow, though it doesn't sound like it will be much. I'm not usually big on checking out the weather in advance, but I have been eager to take the wraps off Manstovia for the spring for weeks now, so now I'm scoping the weather report for reasons for optimism. And I have succeeded in giving life to hope, as the weekend looks sunny, and they are calling for a high of 43 °F on Saturday and 47 °F Sunday, so it sounds like Sunday may be my day.
