SimCity: Now With 92% Less Crashing; Maxis Walks Back from Offline Comment

SimCity Update #4 is penned by EA Maxis SVP Lucy Bradshaw, who is "happy to report that the core problem with getting in and having a great SimCity experience is almost behind us," saying they have "reduced game crashes by 92% from day one." She admits she's not able to offer the "all clear" for the game she'd hoped to, but seems optimistic that they've turned the corner from the game's rocky launch. There's also a new tweet on the SimCity account quickly walking back from this tweet they posted over the weekend which said: "We have no intention of offlining SimCity any time soon but we'll look into that as part of our earning back your trust efforts." It seems there is a disagreement among the operators of their twitter account, because the new update states this isn't actually possible: "The game was designed for MP, we sim the entire region on the server so this is just not possible."

Tomb Raider Patched

Steam News has details on a new patch for Tomb Raider that's now automatically available to update the PC edition of the platformer reboot, addressing issues with NVIDIA hardware, Lara's spiffy new hair rendering, and other usability and gameplay issues. Here are the patch notes:

We have just made public a new version of the PC version of Tomb Raider, build 1.0.718.4. This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client.

This update addresses a variety of issues that we either found out about shortly before release or immediately after.

Fixes include:

  • Addressed some stability and startup issues on machines that have both Intel and NVIDIA graphics hardware.
  • Fix for players being unable to progress related to the boat in the beach area.
  • Some fixes for crashes on startup and when selecting Options.
  • Some small improvements to TressFX hair rendering.
  • Fixes for various graphics glitches, including certain effects not being visible in fullscreen mode.
  • Fixed a problem that caused some users to not be able to use exclusive fullscreen.
  • Added support for separate mouse/gamepad inversion for aiming, as well as support for x-axis inversion.
  • Fixes related to the benchmark scene and benchmark mode.
  • Various other small fixes.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone. If you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, Build716.5, that can be used to switch back to the previous version. Please note however that you can only play multiplayer with people that share your version.

Out of the Blue

Today, of course, was the tough part about switching to daylight saving time, as it involved waking up early. This actually reminded me of one more thing I actually like about it though, is that it was dark when I got up this morning, which makes me feel like getting up early has a payoff: If you are going to get up at the crack of dawn, it may as well be at the crack of dawn, so to speak.
