Sword of the Stars: The Pit and Demo Released

Kerberos Productions announces the release of Sword of the Stars: The Pit, a new dungeon-crawling RPG using the same setting as their Sword of the Stars 4X strategy games. The game debuts exclusively on GamersGate as a DRM-free download at a 10% discount for the first week, and they also have a six-level playable demo to try before you buy. Here's word:

Kerberos Productions, the makers of the Sword of the Stars series of 4X strategy titles, have today released their first science fiction role-playing game for PC. Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a fun, fast, light-hearted RPG in the tradition of Rogue and other old school dungeon-diving games. Set in the popular Sword of the Stars universe, the game offers a rich science fiction backdrop and sharp, modern gameplay. The game’s turn-based mechanics and playful art style are suitable to a wide audience.

New Painkiller Hell & Damnation DLC

Steam now offers The Clock Strikes Meat Night, the second DLC pack for Painkiller Hell & Damnation, the first-person shooter from The Farm 51. The title is pretty self-explanatory, but if you need it spelled out for you, here is what happens when the clock strikes meat night: "The DLC is packed full of new enemies, a unique character set, three new single player maps, new environmental weapons, dual weapon upgrades, a new health tarot card and the single player and cooperative gameplay have also been expanded. So join Daniel Garner on his carnivorous mission to break himself free from purgatory today."

Old School RuneScape Launches

The RuneScape 2007 Server Poll announces the launch of Old School RuneScape following a vote of support from RuneScape players for a retro version of the free-to-play adventure game. The fledgling version is live for all who have voted, but Jagex is also still deciding how much support to put behind this. Word is:

RuneScape as it was in late 2007 has often been heralded as one of the defining periods of the game by its players. Since 2007 the game has undergone some significant improvements, including a completely new graphic and audio engine, upgrade of its combat system and with additional quests and updates added weekly.

Through the vote over the next week, RuneScape players will decide what level of investment the Old School RuneScape should receive going forward, ranging from a basic service with just critical maintenance, to an additional full blown development team focusing on evolving that game in a different direction the players votes will decide.

Resident Evil 6 Benchmark

The GeForce website now offers a Resident Evil 6 Benchmark, to help assess your system's capability of running the Windows edition of the horror shooter sequel when it is released next month. CapCom Unity has further details on the benchmark and the game itself:

The (rather gorgeous) PC version of RE6 is exactly one month away, and now that the release is in view our benchmark test is ready to size up your rig. Head over to GeForce and hit up the "Downloads" tab for the file.

At the end of the benchmark, you'll be given a score similar to those received in Mercenaries. Naturally the higher the score and rank (A and S being the best), the better RE6 will run on your machine.

The PC version includes the various title updates that have been added to the consoles - namely, unlocking Ada's campaign from the start, allowing optional co-op in that campaign and offering further camera tweaking.

RE6 PC also includes "Mercenaries No Mercy," which floods the map with 50+ enemies at a time (more than the console counterparts) by taking advantage of increased tech specs.

Game's out March 22, available digitally in the US for $39.99, and in EU for €29.99/Ł19.99.

BioShock Infinite Steam Pre-purchase Unlocks

The Steam Page for BioShock Infinite is now accepting pre-purchases of Irrational Games' upcoming first-person shooter sequel. This does not include a discount, but includes three reward tiers that will unlock as more customers make an advance commitment. The first tier is already unlocked, so this offer now includes a free copy of the original BioShock. The second tier, currently one percent complete, will add exclusive BioShock Infinite Team Fortress 2 items, and the third tier will add a free copy of X-Com: Enemy Unknown. Those who already own one or both of the bonus games can gift them to friends through Steam.

Ubisoft is actively seeking to improve its relationship with the PC gaming community, as seen in comments on MCV that acknowledge the damage the publisher's recent actions have caused in that area, in particular, their recently ended "always on" DRM policy. "We are always seeking to improve. We took a lot of that feedback on board. With every game on PC we are improving. Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed III on PC were very high quality."

Resident Evil 6 PC Preorder Bonus Unlocked

CapCom Unity details how preorders are progressing for the upcoming Windows edition of Resident Evil 6, saying enough users have pre-purchased the game on Steam to unlock their tier 2 bonuses, which include an artbook and a copy of Resident Evil 5. They add there's still time to unlock the third reward tier of a DLC season's pass, though they also note there are some complications with this involving RE5's use of Games for Windows LIVE: "However, we are now working on a solution for activating preorders in all regions not supported by Games for Windows Live. For non-GFWL countries, we will be instituting the following preorder structure, substituting DMC4 for RE5. We hope to have this structure up and in full effect by this Friday."

Out of the Blue

Still processing the news of the closure of the UGO, GameSpy, and 1UP websites. As I commented to loonyboi about this, all those properties ending up in the same hands seemed to make some change in this regard inevitable, so it's not like this was completely unexpected, but having all three sites go in the same firing squad is still a little shocking. Best of luck to all of those looking for work as a result of this.
