Flashback HD Remake Planned?

Gameblog.fr has a French-language report saying an HD remake of classic platformer Flashback is in the works. The unconfirmed report has a screenshot and notes that this document shows that the CNC has earmarked €300,000 to a company called Vector Cell for a project called Flashback Origins. Thanks VG247.

Max Payne 3 DLC Details

Rockstar Games has a new article on the four new gameplay modes in Deathmatch Made in Heaven, the upcoming Max Payne 3 DLC. These are Dead Men Walking, Run and Stun, Marked Man, and Time Attack, and they have screenshots as well as details. They follow this with a subsequent article on the weapons in the pack, outlining the kind of mayhem one can commit when properly armed with a Cattle Prod, a Night Stick, a Stun Gun, and Pepper Spray, as well as the inherent dangers in stepping on a Bouncing Betty.

Miner Wars 2081 Adds Offline Mode

Steam News has details on a new patch that's now automatically available for Miner Wars 2081, Keen Software House's 6DOF shooter. In addition to bug fixes and optimizations, the update adds two free add-ons as well as the ability to play the game's single-player campaign without being logged in or even connected to the Internet. There's an accompanying update on the Miner Wars Website that discusses the patch, while also addressing two issues: reports of bad framerates, which is apparently happening on some systems with onboard video as well as a separate video card (they are working on a fix), and accusations of censorship, which they say are a misunderstanding based on a single deleted comment. Here's what the new patch includes:

  • Offline single-player for Steam version of Miner Wars 2081 – in other words, now you don’t have to be connected to internet and logged into our servers to play the campaign.
  • Optimizations and bug fixes, more info: http://www.minerwars.com/CurrentBuildFeatures.aspx
  • Two new add-ons available for free as part of Miner Wars 2081 installation:
    • Cheats – infinite ammo, immortality, skip to any mission, and more (Ctrl+F1 in game)
    • 2.5D Experiment - multiplayer 2.5D add-on for MW 2081 - available as a set of 2.5D death-match maps (all 2.5D sectors have 2.5D as a prefix)

Into the Black

Link of the Day: Least Anticipated Releases of 2013. Thanks Ant.

Storm Brewing at Starbreeze

The Games in Development section on the Starbreeze Website has a recently added listing for an unannounced co-op, science fiction FPS game called Storm. There is nothing there yet but an image and the following three lines: "Currently in development. Co-op Sci Fi FPS. It is our future." VG247 notes that that section does not have a listing for Cold Mercury, a "freemium" game announced early last year, so it's possible this is a new title for that project.

Atari U.S. Files for Bankruptcy

The U.S. arm of Atari has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York as part of an effort to separate itself from its financially troubled French parent company, reports latimes.com (thanks Develop). Here's an excerpt that sums up the situation:

But the company's growth potential has been hampered by its near total reliance on London financial company BlueBay Asset Management for cash. A $28-million credit facility with BlueBay lapsed Dec. 31, leaving Atari without the resources to release games currently in the works, including a real-money gambling title titled "Atari Casino."

Efforts to recapitalize the corporation have been unsuccessful, in part because of its complex structure as essentially an American business with a French public stock listing.

Shares in Atari S.A. have dropped in value from more than 11 Euros in 2008 to less than 1 Euro recently.

Atari Inc. has secured a commitment for $5.25 million dollars in debtor-in-possession financing to continue operations and release games. If Chapter 11 is successfully completed, the U.S. business could reemerge with its own resources and little or no debt to BlueBay.

It's not yet clear who might step up to buy Atari Inc., although Wilson will probably seek backers to help him keep control. It's also possible the company could be sold to another buyer, whole or in pieces.

Three Dog on Fallout Tease Fallout

The Fallout wiki has a new trailer offering an audio interview (conducted in an echo chamber) with Erik Dellums the voice actor behind Three Dog, the DJ from the Fallout series, who recently made headlines by teasing a possible return of his character. They specify right off that he's not there to discuss any unannounced projects, but they do discuss the reaction to his tweets like this, as he says neither he nor Bethesda thought this would cause the sensation it has, a naïveté he may be able to pull off, but it's hard to believe Bethesda did not no the reaction fans would have to a new Fallout tease. Thanks No Mutants Allowed.

Stronghold Kingdoms Boasts 1.5M Players

Firefly Studios announces Stronghold Kingdoms now has more than 1.5 million registered users, and they are launching their a new game world to help compensate for demand for their online castle-building game. The 13th world, called "world 7" (we're just going to assume that makes sense), will go live on Wednesday, and they express hopes that this is the first of many such launches this year.

U.K. Charts

GfK Chart-Track lists the 20 bestselling full-priced PC entertainment titles in the U.K. for the week ending January 19th. Football Manager 2013 manages to stay at number one again, and the only entry not on last week's chart is Assassin's Creed III at #20. There is a shakeup on the all platforms chart, however, as DmC: Devil May Cry lands at number one.
