The Baldur's Gate Website announces that Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is now available for Windows PCs through the Beamdog Service. The game was to be released for all platforms today, but Trent Oster tweets that the iOS build is not approved, Android is trailing iOS, and the Mac OSX version is also delayed (thanks Eurogamer/Modojo). Here's word:

If you've already purchased Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, you can either download it through the Beamdog client, which can be found here, or through the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Installer which can be downloaded here.

Please note that due to extreme server load it may take some time to get your game, but we are working around the clock to alleviate the situation.

Oculus Rift Delayed

The folks behind the Oculus Rift announce the delay until March 2013 of the developer kits for these gaming headsets:

When we launched our Kickstarter campaign in August, we hoped to sell a few hundred kits to game developers and virtual reality enthusiasts around the world. Instead, we were blown away by the overwhelming response from a community of almost 10,000 backers, who raised nearly $2.5 million dollars to help us develop the Oculus Rift.

Designing, sourcing, and manufacturing thousands of developer kits is no small feat. Since our Kickstarter, we’ve been up against the wall, working around the clock to produce and distribute over 7,500 units in just 4 short, crazy months. We’ve had to modify our original design for mass-manufacturing and, at the same time, balance additional features with our tight schedule.

We wanted to have the developer kits to all our backers before the holidays; but more than that, we want to ship the best Oculus Rift developer kit possible. In order to accommodate the required changes, new features, and manufacturing duration, we had to shift our ship date.

We’re happy to be able to finally announce that the Oculus Rift developer kits will begin shipping in March 2013.

We want to thank everyone for their patience and support. Know that we’re pouring our hearts into this project.

MS Planning Annual "Windows Blue" Releases?

The Verge reports that Microsoft is moving towards more frequent OS updates with a product tastefully codenamed "Blue" they say will be a low cost, or even free release that will be standardized across desktops and phones to provide more frequent updates. This is based on hearing from "several sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans," and expands on a ZDNet story from this summer that suggested Windows Blue was more of a service pack. Their unconfirmed report says a licensed copy of Windows will be required to take advantage of this, and a lot of it seems to be focused on how apps will be sold through the Windows Store. Thanks nin.

Drox Operative Beta Patches

The Windows and OS X betas of Drox Operative can now be updated via new version 0.933 beta patches now available on the Drox Operative Website. Word is: "This patch auto detects a better starting resolution, fixes a trading issue, balances a bunch of things better, and fixes a bunch of minor issues." The patch notes have more complete details.

GunSwords Beta

The Gunswords Website now offers access to the Windows beta of this online multiplayer turn-based strategy game, saying the OS X beta should be released next week sometime. Here's word: "In GunSwords, players must build and customize squads consisting of three specialized classes of armed tin soldiers: Swordsmen, Gunners, and Mages, each uniformed in a different armour style and possessing unique combat abilities. Once a squad is complete the player can battle opposing squads in a variety of hex-grid playing arenas. Featuring a unique art style with 3D graphics and a variety of weapons and spells for players to choose from, GunSwords offers challenging gameplay with endless possibilities for gamers to personalize squads and optimize play strategy."

Predestination Kickstarter

This Kickstarter looks to raise $25,000 for Predestination, a sci-fi themed turn-based space 4X strategy game. Here's word on why the goal for this is so modest: "$25,000 isn't a lot of money to develop a game on, but our team is small and has very low costs. There are also government finance schemes here in Northern Ireland that we can take advantage of, but most of them require us to have already secured finance from somewhere else like an investor or Kickstarter." Here's word on their plans for the game:

Predestination is a turn-based space 4X game that significantly modernises and improves on the gameplay of classic games like Master of Orion II, Civilization and the Galactic Civilizations series. It blends turn-based galaxy management and turn-based tactical combat with modern 3D graphics, player-generated content, and innovative new game mechanics that 4X fans have been waiting years to get their hands on: A 3D galaxy map that works, real planetary exploration, streamlined micromanagement, realistic spying and planetary bombardment mechanics, and many other revolutionary features. It's all in Predestination, whether your focus is on exploring the galaxy, expanding your galactic empire, exploiting the resources around you or exterminating all races that cross your path.

PlanetSide 2 Bans All Client Mods

The PlanetSide 2 Forums announce that SOE is taking a zero tolerance policy towards client-side modifications for their MMORPG sequel (thanks RPS):

It is vital that you not run software which modifies the Planetside 2 client in any way. If you do this, you are indistinguishable from various hacks that work in the same manner. The result of this is that you will be banned from gameplay and lose your characters/items.

We cannot make exceptions to this. We do understand there are relatively harmless apps that fall in this category, but if we allowed those they would simply be used as a shield excuse by players trying to cheat. This same rule applies to data that Planetside 2 uses for gameplay. Do not modify any of these files or attempt to modify them in memory.

There are some applications that modify the windows or directx environment without changing the client. These may also result in suspensions unless we specifically exempt them and declare them ok to use.

The most simple guidance here is do not use third party programs which change the Planetside 2 gameplay in any way unless it has been specifically cleared by SOE.

The above does not apply to user initiated *.INI changes, those are allowed, although setting your own options incorrectly can result in bugs.

Telepath Tactics Kickstarter

A new Kickstarter Campaign is underway for Telepath Tactics, Sinister Design's multiplayer game set in the Telepath RPG game world that was announced earlier this year. The game just recently suffered a likely delay, and the explanation of why they are seeking a relatively modest $25,000 kickstart ties into that:

Every single thing you read in the section above is currently in-game and working. There is no question about whether this project is too ambitious to complete: it isn't. The lion's share of the really tough stuff is already done. I just need more resources to give the game all the content and polish it needs.

SO, WHAT DO YOU NEED $25,500 FOR?

I've crunched some numbers, and $25,500 is the bare minimum amount of money it will take to finish Telepath Tactics to my satisfaction. (Please note that I am not counting wages for myself in this figure. I don't want a salary; I just want the money to get this thing done right.)

The WarZ Patch; Data Wipe

This forum post announces plans for a data wipe for The War Z, following a new patch yesterday in the MMO zombie game. Word is: "Hey guys, we are doing our final sweeps on item balancing and exploits. We have locked down a significant portion of exploits and feel pretty good about where we are at currently. If all goes well and we do not find any other new exploits we intend to do a wipe at the end of the week." Indie Retro News has further word from a registered forum post suggesting the game may be adding a condition that will require an additional purchase to have more than three human clan members play together, though this seems to be unconfirmed at this time.

GODUS Multiplayer Details

The Kickstarter Page for Project GODUS features a new video called "Designing GODUS with Peter & Jack #2," where Peter and Jack (we're all on a first name basis here) discuss multiplayer support in 22cans' upcoming god game (thanks IncGamers). This follows up on a previous update and video discussing the inspiration for the project, saying: "We sit down with Peter and Jack again, answering some of your questions to yesterday's video and set out what GODUS single and multiplayer will play like." Continue here to read the full story.

Tropico 4 Gold Edition Rogues Trailer

This trailer introduces the rogue's gallery of NPCs in Tropico 4 Gold Edition, the recently released bundle of Tropico 4 and the Modern Times expansion for the construction/management game. Word is: "The “Meet the Rogues” video features such offbeat characters as the ever-intellectual Miss Pineapple, the incredibly intolerable Sunny Flowers and the overbearing General Rodriguez. Each of these NPC’s will challenge your skills as a leader, tasking you with different missions to complete, while helping (or hindering) your island’s progress from backwater banana republic to global superpower. Download the new trailer now for a quick look at the humorous personalities that make Tropico 4 Gold Edition much more than a simple city-builder." Continue here to read the full story.

Gollop on X-COM Remake

Eurogamer.net talks with XCOM: Enemy Unknown producer Jake Solomon and original X-COM designer Julian Gollop about how the new installment in the series lives up to its forebears. "I think Firaxis has done a great job," Julian Gollop told them. "The game is addictive and absorbing, not to mention quite challenging on the classic difficulty setting."

Out of the Blue

The oncoming cold I mentioned yesterday already seems to be outgoing, as my sore throat is abating, and it doesn't seem it's being replaced by any further symptoms. The worst of it as this point is that I'm constantly clearing my throat, which as George Costanza taught us is "a non-verbal implication of doubt." Hopefully I won't accidentally imply I suspect anyone of murder.
