Hotline Miami Sequel Revealed

Jonatan Söderström tweets the revelation of unannounced plans for a sequel to Hotline Miami, the hit throwback serial killer game (thanks Eurogamer). Word is: "Working while listening to the sweet tunes of a preliminary Hotline Miami 2 soundtrack that we've put together during the weekend."

DOOM 3 BFG Edition Patch and GPL Source Code

The Bethesda Blog announces the promised release of the source code for the DOOM 3 BFG Edition under terms of The GNU General Public License. The id Software section on GitHub has the files along with an explanation of the legalities of using the source code, and additional restrictions besides the GNU GPL, including this condition: "This source release does not contain any game data, the game data is still covered by the original EULA and must be obeyed as usual." The same update also has details on a new patch that will automatically be provided for the game through Steam. Here are the patch notes: Continue here to read the full story.

Max Payne 3 Painful Memories DLC Next Week

Rockstar Games announces a December 4th release date for the Painful Memories DLC for Max Payne 3, the third-person shooter sequel. This is a delay, as this was expected last month, but the setback goes unaddressed. Here's word:

Inspired by the grisly shootouts from Max’s past, the Painful Memories Pack will bring four new maps and much more to Max Payne 3 Multiplayer this December.

Revisit the subway bloodbath from the original Max Payne in the Roscoe Street Subway map. Flashback to the dingy Hoboken watering hole at Marty’s Bar, open fire on the posh Branco family yacht in Shoot First and wage Gang Wars at Canal De Panamá. The Painful Memories Pack also includes the IMG 5.56 and UAR-21 assault rifles, new avatars, items and the Hangover Burst, which causes enemies to respawn with blurred vision, reduced stamina and health.

Check out the first screens from this pack below, which will be available on December 4th for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE and $9.99 on PlayStation Network and PC (Rockstar Pass owners will receive this content at no additional charge).

We're also making the new shoot out at the Roscoe Street Subway station artwork above available as desktops and avatars at rockstargames.com/downloads, along with a pair of original illustrations from the Hostage Negotiation Pack featuring the Filhos De Ogum wielding the IA2 Assault Rifle and other weaponry as they attempt to dominate the Estádio Do Galatians and O Palácio Strip Club multiplayer maps.

Far Cry 3 Map Editor Trailer

Here's a new video showing off the power of the map editor that will accompany Far Cry 3 when the first-person shooter sequel is released next month. Word is: "Create your own tropical oasis, or a jungle death trap, or anything else you can imagine, with the in-game map editor for Far Cry 3. A deep and varied library of set pieces allow for endless possibilities. Plan every last detail from the flora and fauna to the derelict tanker crashed up on a rocky beach. Build your own adventure or download top rated maps from the community, free of charge. What the trailer now to see how." Continue here to read the full story.

No BioShock Infinite Multiplayer

Ken Levine's Twitter feed reveals that BioShock Infinite will not include any form of multiplayer support. The designer expressed skepticism early on about the inclusion of multiplayer in Irrational's shooter sequel, though a recent job posting seemed to indicate it would indeed be part of the game. Now in a series of responses to questions about multiplayer support, he puts several nails in the coffin for this prospect, saying: Nope, No Multi, No MP in Infinite to being badgered about the prospect, leading to an exasperated retweet: "Thank sweet baby Jesus no multi ---That's exactly the reason we don't have it. That kid is persistent." Thanks nin via Kotaku.

Op Ed

TechCrunch - The Gameplay Is The Gameplay. Always. Thanks Ant via Slashdot.
The fun factor is about more than making a game is amusing or full of pretty rewards. If your game is a dynamic system to be mastered and won, then you can go nuts. If you can give the player real fun then you can afford to break some of those format rules, and that’s how you get to lead rather than follow the market. If not then be prepared to pay through the nose to acquire and retain players. Your format strategy won’t matter as your game will lose users regardless of what you do.

games.on.net - Ten lessons that other MMO developers must learn from the death of City of Heroes.
As somebody who purchased the City of Villains Collectors Edition at full retail price back in the day, the transition to free-to-play left me less than impressed. My main character, a Mastermind class with a sweet personal army of ninja, was locked out to me… because I hadn’t purchased the ability to have Mastermind characters. Yet my (many) alts were available to ‘unlock’ simply because they were non-paid classes.

#AltDevBlogADay - What they DON’T tell you about being a game developer.
Because of this unique perspective of having a relatively successful title (despite not yet being released) on my first ever attempt, I haven’t yet developed the pessimism that often comes with being an experienced indie game developer. This has led me to want to write this new thought piece, which goes into all of the things that they DON’T tell you about being a game developer. If you want the short and sweet version, feel free to skip to the end.

Out of the Blue

Happy Cyber Monday, presuming this is actually as much of a thing as they make it out to be. I guess the good news is that nobody is going to get trampled during a "door-buster" today, though after some of the Black Friday footage I saw, I'm not sure I'd bet against that.

Out of the Blue

MrsBlue and I went to a concert last night, as Graham Parker, one of my very favorite musical artists, has reunited with The Rumor, his band from his most successful commercial period. The show last night was their first public performance together in 30 years, and for a fan like myself, it was an incredible experience. I don't imagine this will mean a lot to most of you, as he is not particularly well-known, but if you are at all a fan of his work, I highly recommend the new album and tour.
