0x10c Interview; Test Footage

An article on PC Gamer talks with Mojang's Markus 'Notch' Persson and Tobias Möllstam about 0x10c, their upcoming space simulation. "The goal is to have it feel a bit like Firefly," says Notch. "You can try to land on a planet but you mess up and, instead of having the ship just explode like it would in real life, the landing gear gets broken. Then you have to try to fix that by finding resources. Instead of the adventure being flying from here to here, it’s: I set the destination, oh god I hit a small asteroid and the cloaking device broke. I think they really nailed that kind of emergent aspect in FTL." They also include a link to this trailer showing footage of a "first draft" of an "art test" for the game. This new trailer from Hotline Miami is said to be "based on a true story." Don't say you weren't warned. Continue here to read the full story.

Mass Effect DLC Next Month on Xbox

Computer and Video Games has word from BioWare that the recently revealed Omega single-player DLC pack for Mass Effect 3 is expected on Xbox 360 on November 27th for 1200 space bux (USD $15.00). There's no word on other platforms for the moment. They also have a video about the DLC, but this is marked private, so unless that gets fixed, it's not going to help much. BioWare says this is "double the size of the largest DLC we've done for Mass Effect 3," and word is it will involve battling with Cerberus general Petrovsky for control of Omega.

League of Legends Soars

Over 70 million players are now registered to play League of Legends, announces Riot Games, saying this is more than double the number of users the game boasted as of November 2011, adding that the number of monthly active users has nearly tripled in that time. Here are the impressive numbers: "Riot Games have now amassed 70 million registered summoner names – more than double compared to November 2011. The volume of monthly active players is almost triple the amount of 2011 coming in at 32 million and 3 million daily peak concurrency. The total amount of hours played a month reaches 1 billion." Since a player population that would qualify as the 19th largest country in the world is hard to put into perspective (though that bit about the countries helps), they have created an infographic to help us comprehend the implications of this.

NBA 2K13 Sells Well

2K Sports announces that NBA 2K13 is selling at a far faster rate than its predecessors, saying the pro basketball simulation sold through at an almost 50 percent greater rate than NBA 2K11 in its first week, with international sales up 66 percent over that title, which set the benchmark for the series. "Our early sales figures are a validation of our ongoing efforts to push this franchise to new heights," said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. "We owe it to our great fans to continually improve our title - year in and year out - and that’s exactly what we’ve done with NBA 2K13."

Op Ed

Ars Technica - Why on-disc downloadable content isn’t the crime it’s made out to be.
So let's all settle down. Just because a portion of a game disc is locked away as DLC doesn't mean you're getting ripped off. Both games and DLC are still value propositions that have to be judged on their own merits, regardless of whether they're available on disc from day one or not. You're not entitled to free content just because it's on the disc, or because it's taking away from what "should" have been in the core game. Don't like it? Don't buy it!

Out of the Blue

Wow, the weatherman didn't lie, as it's pretty chilly out there, so I've decided I will totally celebrate by making some chili. I mentioned to MrsBlue that the news that the international chili cook-off was permitting beans for the first time had me contemplating making a chili that included some of the stuff I never use, like beans, tomatoes, and onions. She just looked back at me and said "no." At least I don't have to worry that she's tired of the way I make it.
