WoW Screenshot Watermarks?

An article called Looking inside your screenshots on Ownedcore alleges the use of digital watermarks in World of Warcraft screenshots that include the player's account ID, a timestamp, and the IP address of the realm where the shot was taken, noting this can be used by Blizzard to identify hackers as well as the location of illicit private servers for the MMORPG. They say they can confirm this functionality was added sometime between 2008 and 2010, and note the concern that this opens up WoW players to potential exploitation. Thanks Ant via Slashdot.

Showcasing the signature all-out vehicular warfare the Battlefield series is known for, Battlefield 3: Armored Kill delivers six new vehicles for players to control. Gamers will jump in the seat of tanks, ATV’s, mobile artillery and an aerial gunship that lets gamers rain death from above as they traverse across four huge maps ranging from the snow-capped peaks of Alborz Mountains to the arid vistas of Bandar Desert – the largest multiplayer map in Battlefield history. Also making its debut in Battlefield 3: Armored Kill is Tank Superiority, a dangerously intense gameplay mode where two opposing tank platoons must battle it out for control of a single location on the map until one team has fully bled their opponent’s respawn tickets dry.

Path of Exile Free Weekend

This weekend will be another public test for Path of Exile, the upcoming indie action/RPG, as players will be offered access to the beta beginning September 14th. You can find all the details in this FAQ, and here's a bit:

So far, the much-anticipated game has raised over USD$1,200,000 in a Kickstarter-like campaign from fans buying access to the closed beta, virtual pets and pre-purchased game currency. This weekend is the opportunity for anyone to try to game for free, without having to buy a supporter pack.

The Path of Exile Beta servers will open for public access at 5pm PDT on Friday, September 14. Public access will end at 11:59pm PDT Sunday night, September 16. A full FAQ about the public weekend is available at www.pathofexile.com/publicweekend/.

When released, the game will be free to play, but will not feature ‘pay-to-win’. A previous public weekend in July attracted 55,000 players.

The latest patch adds new skills such as Arctic Breath and Ghost Reaver, additional quests, greatly improved minion functionality and a new look for item hovers.

A host of unique items have been added, including several designed by Brother Laz, author of the popular Diablo 2 mod Median XL. Over 90 fans who have purchased the USD$1000 ‘Diamond Supporter’ pack also get to design unique items for the game.

While the game is currently in a Closed Beta, fans who pre-purchase at least USD$10 of credit for the game’s ‘ethical microtransactions’ receive a beta key.

The Secret World Lead Laid Off

Develop has word that The Secret World lead designer Martin Bruusgaard has been laid off by Funcom along with other developers on the MMORPG. Here's word:

Revealing the news on Twitter, Martin Bruusgaard said he was no longer with the developer, and had been put on forced leave along with most of the Oslo office.

He suggested that the studio’s Norway headquarters had been hit much harder than other offices as it was expensive to run, and suggested that it was “cheaper to hire someone abroad”.

“Unfortunately, I'm not with Funcom anymore,” said Bruusgaard.

“Got put on forced leave along with most of our Oslo Office, a week ago.”

The first mission is almost final beside the second and third which are missing voice overs. The campaign will have 31 story missions, every mission should take 30 minutes to finish and that brings us to almost 15 hours of gameplay! Plus unlimited amount of time in free-roaming mode, in-game editor and multiplayer."

BIS Devs Arrested for Espionage

The Bohemia Interactive Studios Forums have a confirmation from CEO Marek Spanel of sketchy reports from yesterday that a pair of the company's employees have been arrested for espionage. This is reported in Greek on NEWS247, and a machine translation shows us this says a pair of Czechs were arrested in Myrina, Greece with a camcorder and photographs of camps and military facilities. They have explained they were doing research for Arma 3, but there's no further word yet on how this is playing out. Spanel's post confirms the report is true, but asks that it not be discusses in the forums "at least until we know more specific details about the case."
