has an unconfirmed report that ArenaNet has been experiencing attempts at unauthorized access to Guild Wars 2
accounts. These differ from the typical such attacks as they are reportedly the result of a breach at an unnamed Guild Wars fan-site, and that the perpetrators are now trying the username and password combinations from the site to take advantage of users who also use them for their game account. They include the obvious warning that this is not a good idea.
has more on NPD Groups August report of retail video game and hardware sales in the U.S. Following word earlier this week
of a mysterious drop in player totals, the full report indicates sales figures continue to decline, though it seems obvious that they are still struggling to capture how much of the market is no longer represented by retail: "Total U.S. retail sales of new video game systems, software, and accessories hit $515.6 million during the month, down from $647.2 million a year ago, according to the NPD Group. Adding in used, rental, and digital-format sales, NPD estimated that consumers spent a total of $989 million on gaming in August."

Kotaku - You Shouldn't Have To Be Middle Class or Rich To Make Video Games.
For now, Valve says that Greenlight will continue to evolve. Fantastic. But it's not just Greenlight that needs to change. So, too, does the attitude surrounding who should be making games. Some people do it for the love, and so yes, they're going to keep going at it even though they might not make much of any money. So to tell a developer that they might want to reconsider their passion just because they're not rolling in cash is heartbreaking. They deserve to be here just as much as anyone else, and there's no shortage of things trying to keep them out.

2K Games and Firaxis are now offering pre-sales of XCOM: Enemy Unknown
, their upcoming continuation of the strategic elements of the XCOM series of counter-UFO games. This is available through various digital distributors and includes the incentive of the Elite Soldier pack, which offers "top-of-the-line soldier customization features" they say "will only be available while supplies last" (which, as usual, begs the question of how you exhaust a supply of digital content). They also announce
that those who pre-purchase the game through Steam
have the opportunity to unlock incentives based on the number of other preorders: "If enough people pre-order XCOM: Enemy Unknown , they will unlock 3 exclusive XCOM-themed items in Team Fortress 2. If even more people pre-order, they will unlock a free copy of Firaxis’s other big title, Civilization V (and yes, you can gift it to a friend if you already own it)." NBCUniversal is planning an "upscale" makeover for G4, their guy-centric cable network that still retains some of its original focus on video games, at least for the moment. They say the latest tweak to the networks brand will take place early next year, and their sources tell them it will take the channel "in a direction reminiscent of GQ" (insert Tom Brady joke here). Their unconfirmed report says this will involve "a more sophisticated look while remaining true to its tech and vid game roots," though many would argue that the channel strayed from those roots years ago
with their previous rebranding. Thanks nin via Kotaku
is not due for release until next month, PC PowerPlay
has word from executive producer Julien Roby on plans for DLC for Arkane's stealth assassination game. "Since DLC is more contained, we definitely want to try and explore more themes of the stories, the characters and the locations," he tells them. "When we did Dishonored, we wanted to build the world around the missions so that it was believable, and has a lot of elements that we don’t actually use in the game, so we definitely want to explore more of these things."
The PC edition of I Am Alive

Trine 2: Goblin Menace is now available on Steam
, offering the new DLC for Frozenbyte's platformer sequel at a 15% discount. Additionally, they have a sale

Saw my buddy Devicer for a bit yesterday and got to spend a little time with the Devicer family's beautiful puppy, Eugene, an 8 month old Great Dane. So just how big is a Great Dane when they are "little?" Well, he's tall enough to kiss my face while I'm sitting on a kitchen stool, and weighs every bit as much as I do. The projection is he'll end up about 25 pounds heavier than I am, to which I can only say I am glad he seems to really like me, as it would be pretty intimidating if he didn't.
