Battlefield 3 Armored Kill Launch Trailer

The Battlefield 3 Website now offers a "launch trailer" for the Armored Kill DLC for the military shooter sequel. This is a bit of a tease for Windows and Xbox 360 gamers, as the pack is currently only available for Battlefield 3 Premium Members on the PS3. Premium members on other platforms can expect the pack on September 11th, while the unwashed masses will be able to get it on September 18th on the PS3 and September 25th for PC and Xbox 360. Word is: "Featuring new drivable tanks, ATV’s, mobile artillery and more, this expansion pack also delivers huge battlefields for an all-out vehicle assault. Armored Kill also includes the biggest map in Battlefield history."

GUTS Announced; Alpha Released

The Big Men Games Website announces GUTS, an upcoming action/strategy game from an indie two-person team described like so: It's being crafter by two dudes, one of which [sic] worked at Blizzard Entertainment for eight years, shipping Diablo III. The other is a newly minted computer science major from UT." The finished game will be a $5.00 DRM-free experience playable in a web-browser with the Unity engine. This trailer shows off some gameplay, and a playable alpha version is already available.

Black Ops 2 Specs; No XP Support

Call of Duty Forum offers minimum system specifications for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, revealing the upcoming first-person shooter sequel will not support Windows XP (thanks Destructoid/GameSpy). Word is: "Since we upgraded the engine to use DirectX11, Windows XP is no longer supported. It requires Windows Vista or later." They also outline PC-specific enhancements: "Black Ops II PC features enhanced lighting, shadows, antialiasing, bloom, depth of field, ambient occlusion, and other enhanced effects that are still in the works. And the game can run at higher resolutions and higher framerates on the PC." Here are the specifications:

OS: Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHz or AMD Phenom X3 8750 2.4 GHz

New Steam Community Launches

Valve announces the launch of a new update to the Steam community, saying this is "focused on finding and sharing the best community content." The new Steam Community Page is home to all this, and this page offers an overview on all this.

More on Valve's Hardware Plans

A listing for an Industrial Designer position on the Valve Corporation Job Postings Page has a very interesting description that expresses Valve's frustration with the progress of hardware development and offers more on their plans to address this (thanks Computer and Video Games). Here's word:

Valve is traditionally a software company. Open platforms like the PC and Mac are important to us, as they enable us and our partners to have a robust and direct relationship with customers. We’re frustrated by the lack of innovation in the computer hardware space though, so we’re jumping in. Even basic input, the keyboard and mouse, haven’t really changed in any meaningful way over the years. There’s a real void in the marketplace, and opportunities to create compelling user experiences are being overlooked.

Borderlands 2 Mechromancer next Month

Gearbox Software revealed at PAX plans to release the planned Mechromancer DLC for Borderlands 2 on October 16th, adding the promised 5th class to the RPG/shooter, reports Kotaku. It was recently announced that a season pass will provide access to four DLC packs for the game, and Gearbox tweets a follow-up clarifying that the Mechromancer pack is separate from this: "No, Season Pass does not include Mechromancer -- she'll be available separately for those that don't get her free with pre-order."

Ships Ahoy - The Sims 3 Supernatural

EA announces The Sims 3 Supernatural is now available, as their lifestyle simulation looks to take a bite out of the popularity of the vampire trend, offering other ways to be paranormal if you think that sucks:

Werewolves, vampires, witches, and fairies … oh my! The Maxis Label of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) today announced that The Sims™ 3 Supernatural Expansion Pack* is now available at retailers nationwide and for digital download on PC and Mac. In The Sims 3 Supernatural, players will experience the madness of the werewolves’ full moon, the menace of vampires, the magic of witches, and the mischief of fairies as they explore the new world of Moonlight Falls. Intoxicating magic and spellbinding surprises await players as they fully embody a supernatural life, playing as new types of Sims with mysterious powers and enchanting traits.

New The Sims 3 patches are available on the game's website and mirrored on The Patches Scrolls.

Realms of Ancient War Rogue Video

A new video from Realms of Ancient War reveals the rogue character from Wizarbox's upcoming hack-and-slash action/RPG. Here's what to expect from this class when RAW is released on September 19th: "The Rogue is a polyvalent and cunning young woman, who masters bow and daggers with equal virtuosity. Unlike the Wizard, her versatile skills make her lethal in close combat, yet very capable of safely harassing her opponents at range, where the Warrior would struggle. However, her rather light armor and average constitution do not fare very well in lengthy fights against numerous foes. Therefore, she will use her stealth abilities, traps and other dirty tricks to get rid of isolate enemies, before emerging from the shadows when she sees fit and exterminate the remaining opponents!" Continue here to read the full story.

Shadowrun Returns Art

The Harebrained Schemes Website has a post-PAX update from the developers of Shadowrun Returns, revealing the first art assets from the Kickstarted upcoming RPG revival. Word is: "We’ve already released some character design concept art but this is the first time we’re showing real-live-game-res models of player characters available in the game."

The Guns of GUNS and ROBOTS

The GUNS and ROBOTS Website offers new details on Masthead Studios' upcoming MMORPG. This focuses on the guns side of the equation, discussing the various weapons in the game and the considerations that have gone into balancing them. They also serve up some weapon concept art.

Op Ed

Edge Magazine - Assassin's Creed III devs: "Easy mode often ruins games".
"It’s like if I picked up a book and it said, 'Do you want the easy version or the complicated version?' [Game designers] can simplify the language, you know; we can make it two syllables."

Kotaku - Easy Modes Can Ruin Games? Um, No. Thanks nin.
It' just baffling to see that, in the year 2012, there are still people in the video game industry who approach things as though this was the 1980s, and the only games on the market were there to test you. If I don't have to pass a test just to turn a page in a book, or reach the second act of a movie, I shouldn't have to in a story-rich video game either.

Out of the Blue

The surest sign that fall is upon us came this morning, as all the kids were out waiting for the school bus today. The groups we saw all seemed far happier about the prospects of returning to class than I recall being. Anyway, with Labor Day yesterday, today sort of feels like a Monday, but to add to the confusion, there's NFL football tomorrow, so it sort of feels like a Saturday. I guess this makes sense, since Seinfeld taught us that Tuesday has no feel unless you are Kramer.
