Gaslamp Games announcesClockwork Empires, a steampunk city-building strategy game the Dungeons of Dredmor developer plans to bring to Windows, OS X, and Linux. This will include multiplayer support as well as solo play, but as they pointedly note, non of that always on DRM that may or may not be present in other such games: "No always-online DRM requirement, unlike certain other games we don’t want to mention. You know who you are and your mothers are very disappointed." Here's a bit on the game itself:
The Clockwork Empire is expanding! Brave people, seeking glory and wealth, are setting forth for uncharted lands in search of fame and fortune. This is a new age of Science – fearless naturalists, clever tinkerers, and brilliant inventors hold sway over the imagination of the common folk, wielding voltaic energies and constructing chromed brass clockwork engines. It is an age of The Arts – poets lie expiring on every street corner, crying for Reform and more laudanum, while the Empire Times spews forth from the great presses of the Capitol, filled with stories of inspiring hubris and adventure from The Colonies. It is an age of Trade – the many arms of the Imperial Chartered Antipodean Trading Company lurch across the oceans like the limbs of a commodity-crazed octopus, dredging untapped markets for wealth and glory. It is an age of Politics – scheming agents of the Empire skulk through the slums and grottoes of the colonies, dodging anarchist schemes and cultists’ rituals, and fulfilling secretive missions on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen. Meanwhile, in the Capitol, favours are curried in the Houses of Parliament and the Panopticon between the artistocratic Lords and the rising classes of Industrial Barons.

Burian Media Enterprises announces Dark Shadows - Army of Evil, a PC-only first-person action/game set in a medieval fantasy environment planned for release in September or October. An official website is online as home to the game, this trailer offers a look at the game's first-person melee combat, and here's word:
The Indie-PC-Only Title is a Single Player First Person Shooter, in which the player takes on the role of a knight.
Dark Shadows - Army of Evil is about a horde of monsters in September 1362. They’ve been ravaging the country like a plague of locusts for over a year and are frightening the people with their scary get-up.
Most people still think they are monsters. But they are only in disguise. While you were away catching a runaway horse, these monsters stormed the castle. The King is injured and a woman named Katerina has been kidnapped.
She is the sister from one of the King’s guards. The bad thing is that you are in love with her after all. So the player needs to go on a long and bloody march through the country to rescue Katarina. The Medieval fantasy game has 19 levels of different areas and is showing gothic architectures.
A lot of effort was put into different atmospheres, depending on the location of the current level. The player can use up to 18 weapons, that can be found during exploration of the world. For example, he can throw stones, use a sword or flail, or use arrow and bow. The most time the player has to fight against the enemies.
Dark Shadows - Army of Evil also includes "Cinematic Effects". These 3D Blood Splatter Scenes are calculated in realtime. In these scenes the computer generates a random camera direction and angle, as well as for the blood effects.
The release for the Indie-Title is announced for September, October 2012. It supports english and german.
Techland announces Project Hell, an upcoming first-person hack-and-slash game that started off as an internally developed modification for Dead Island, their zombie adventure (thanks G4tv). Some details and artwork can be found on SharpenYourAxes! the game's official development blog, where word is:
It was a proof that chopping monsters frozen by magic spells using two-handed swords is brutally fun and addictive. This mod made such an impression that MZM was given a few people from the company to help (including my humble self) and a chance to create a game prototype – but that’s a story for another post. What’s most important right now is the fact that we have independence in developing Project Hell (bear in mind it’s only a code name) and we want to keep you up to date with details about it on this blog.
Everything posted here is work in progress which you can comment convincing us in our greatness or causing us to go home and rethink our lives. We will also ask for your help in making some decisions.
This trailer from MechWarrior Online offers a "River City Reveal" from Piranha's upcoming mech combat game, which will be shown off this week at PAX Prime. Word is: "Nestled within a coastal valley, River City, ravaged by war, is the first urban setting map for MechWarrior Online. From stealth scouting to long range support and right down to all out brawling, players will find areas in River City that suit their needs. The river itself, spanned by two bridges, divides the city into two opposing sides. A fortified citadel dominates the centre of the city and players will fight for control of two key sites: a space port high on a plateau and a crucial industrial port facility on the ocean shoreline. Surrounding the city are hillsides that are still in conflict and the odd airstrike and artillery barrage can still be seen off in the distance. Pools of fire and rubble throughout the city drive home the point that the pristine condition of the city is now just a remnant memory of the past." Continue here to read the full story.
Bethesda's Pete Hines tweets a clarification that he never stated Prey 2 was cancelled after a translation error sparked a rumor that the delayed FPS sequel had been "canx." He goes on to clarify that he "simply reiterated what we've said previously, which is that it's not coming out this year." Thanks VG247.

Robot Entertainment today announced Fire & Water, the first booster pack for Orcs Must Die! 2. The booster pack features three brand new levels and three new Endless Mode conversions that can be played in single-player or with a friend in co-op. Players who download the pack will also find a new array of traps to help them combat terrifying new elemental enemies.
Hellish new Fire Lords and Fire Elementals crumble when killed, leaving behind dangerous Firelings that will hunt the player down and explode when they get too close! Slippery Water Lords and Water Elementals dwindle into pools of water when killed, but don’t count them out of the fight! When Waterlings find dormant puddles, they’ll absorb the stagnant water and grow into new Water Elementals!
War Mages will have access to three exciting new traps to add to their arsenal, as well. The Web Spinner is a new wall trap that ensnares hallways full of passing monsters in a sticky tangle of webs, slowing them down to buy precious time. Ceiling Darts turn your fortress into a temple of doom for orcs, dropping from the ceiling to fire deadly darts in every direction. If the orcs make it past your defenses the first time around, you can give them another dose of pain with the new Floor Portal. Place the floor portal anywhere on the ground. Unsuspecting enemies who step on it will be magically teleported back to the beginning of the level!

Reports of evacuations in New Orleans due to Tropical Storm Isaac certainly bring back scary memories, especially with the predictions it may be a hurricane when it finds land some time tomorrow. I was surprised to realize by way of the news about this that Wednesday is the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, as it seems more recent than that. Here's hoping that all the time that's passed has been used to better protect that area from the possible ravages of the storm.
