THQ Results: InSane Cancelled

THQ's Fiscal 2013 First Quarter Results are online, revealing losses for the period, albeit not as large as projected. Still the new is not good, and is followed by the worse news from a post-earnings conference call that the company has cancelled preproduction of InSane, a high profile collaboration with Guillermo del Toro, saying the rights to the property are being returned to the Hollywood director. "We have decided not to pursue further pre-production on Insane, and have returned all of our IP rights to Guillermo del Toro," said THQ president Jason Rubin. "By canceling these explorations outside of our core business, we feel we can improve focus on our core game portfolio, which remains unchanged." This prompted George Broussard to tweet: "THQ is done. Will just be a year or so going through the paces. Will see how Darkstalker 2 team fares post ship."

Diablo III Hero Profiles Live

Battle.net announces that hero profiles are now on the web to allow Diablo III players to view and share their progress in Blizzard's action/RPG sequel. They promise improved functionality in the future, and that for now the service offers a way to:

  • View your heroes’ gear, stats, and skills. How high have you raised your characters’ attributes? What are they wielding in each slot? What are their most prominent gear bonuses? What skills comprise their current build? Nuance awaits you in the Heroes tab.
  • Track your game progress. How many acts have you cleared? What bosses have you shredded in each difficulty? How far have you leveled up your hardcore and normal artisans? Find out in the Career tab. You can also check your play time (by class) throughout your entire Diablo III career, and learn how many monsters and elites you’ve slain.
  • Share with your friends. The Friends tab lets you check out your BattleTag friends’ characters, so that you can quickly compare notes on gear, skill & rune choices, and everything in between. You can also click on a BattleTag in the Diablo III forums to go directly to that player’s profile.

ESA Annual Report

The Entertainment Software Association's 2011 Annual Report (Adobe Acrobat format) is now online, offering the trade group's assessment of how the video game industry fared last year (thanks VentureBeat). The document kicks off welcoming new members to the association, unfortunately leading off with 38 Studios, which is already out of business. In addition to discussing game sales, tax incentives, and the like, there is also much discussion of the high profile Supreme Court case of Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA)/ESA, as well as the other legal battles they've had to fight along the way. Here's the wrap-up of the introduction by ESA President and CEO Michael D. Gallagher:

These achievements, and the many others described in the following pages, demonstrate our industry’s growing vitality and influence. Yet none of this would have been possible without the dedication and leadership of our member companies. I would like to express my gratitude to our Board members, ESA staff, and the ESRB. Together, we will enhance appreciation for games and increase understanding of the positive impact they have on the economy, education, healthcare, businesses, and the arts. I look forward to further developing our industry’s critical and evolving role in positively shaping and advancing our society’s future.

PlanetSide 2 Beta Beginning; Steam Confirmed

John Smedley's Twitter Feed informs us that beta testing for PlanetSide 2 is getting underway today, saying: "We are go for beta at 2pm. Flagging has started. This is for current PS1 subscribers and All Access members. PS1 vets later" (we're presuming all of this is Pacific time, so that would be 5:00 pm EDT), later stressing that these vets (as opposed to current subscribers) need to register to qualify. In answer to a question about when those with beta keys to the MMOFPS obtained through Twitter would get in, he offers this outlook: "2-3 weeks (ish). depends on how things go in the beta. I can't stress enough that this is an actual 'let's find bugs' beta." It's also worth noting that Smedley recently confirmed the game will be offered through Steam, among other places.

Final Fantasy VII PC Released and Pulled

A PC edition of Final Fantasy VII was available for sale briefly over the weekend, but was quickly pulled, and those who were able to purchase the game were not able to get it to play, reports Joystiq by way of the SQUARE ENIX Forums. Users were unable to get the game to authenticate, leading to speculation that this was a DRM error, but a subsequent post on MCV says they've learned that "the title was is not yet ready and was simply released prematurely," saying they learned this from "a company dealing with the situation."

Prince of Persia Reboot Revealed?

Kotaku offers a screenshot from the Ubisoft forums that they think may be a shot from an upcoming Prince of Persia reboot. They speculate that it suggests a black prince in an Egyptian setting. Or that it's a fake. They note these seem to line up with some other mysterious screenshots posted a few months ago on NeoGAF.

Source 2 Engine Hint

There are bits of code in Valve's Source Filmmaker suggesting plans are in place for a next version of Valve's Source engine. Here's an example: ""Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn't doesn't [sic] exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid -- assume next-gen 'Source 2'." Thanks Valvetime.net via Eurogamer.

Out of the Blue

That belly band dealie we got for the Gunnar-man really does look like it should do the trick, but it just seems a little too tight to leave on him for an extended period. If I can't find another nearby store to look for a larger one I'll find a way to get one online, as I am very eager to stop cleaning up urine puddles.
