Ubisoft announces Expendables 2, a video game tie-in with the upcoming action movie they are bringing to PC, Xbox LIVE Arcade, and PlayStation Network this summer. Here are some screenshots, and here's word:
Today Ubisoft announces the debut of The Expendables 2 Videogame. Based on the second installment in Lionsgate and Millennium Films’ phenomenal film franchise, the ultimate elite mercenary shooter is coming this Summer to PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360 entertainment system and PC. The Expendables 2 Videogame unites four of the world’s most legendary mercenaries—Barney Ross, Gunner Jensen, Hale Caesar and Yin Yang—in a feast of explosive, over-the-top action authentic to the Expendables franchise.
Building on the universe created in the high-octane, star-studded movies, The Expendables 2 Videogame invites gamers on an adventure to rescue an extremely valuable, kidnapped billionaire. It’s business as usual, until all hell breaks loose and the explosive mix of testosterone and kerosene detonates in a massive fireball that never lets up. The adventure concludes right where the new movie begins, creating a continuous story experience for fans of the Expendables’ hard-boiled brand of action.
Players can join up to three friends locally and online to experience all-out action in cinematic, close-quarter combat or while controlling an arsenal of vehicles in exotic locations including Somalian deserts, Burmese jungles, and more, and fans looking to compete for bragging rights can play through several challenges for the top spots on leaderboards.
The Steam Page for Sid Meier's Civilization V - Gods and Kings now offers a playable demo for this expansion for Firaxis' turn-based strategy sequel (thanks Frans). There are no details on the demo, so it's not clear if this supports OS X, as the expansion and game itself offer SteamPlay Mac support. Here's word on the add-on:
Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods and Kings is the first expansion pack for Civilization V - the critically acclaimed 2010 PC Game of the Year. This robust expansion covers the entire scope of time from founding your first Pantheon of the Gods and spreading religion across the world, to deploying your spies in enemy cities in order to steal information and technology.
As you move through the ages, you’ll interact with new types of city-states, engage in new city-state quests and global competitions, and master exciting new systems for land and naval combat. Civilization V: Gods and Kings will also include nine new civilizations, nine new wonders, three original scenarios, and dozens of new units, buildings, and techs that will offer even more ways for players to expand their empire and dominate the world.
Rob Bridgett tweets about the demise of his employer, saying: "RIP Radical Entertainment 1991-2012." Kotaku has a confirmation that while the developer of the Prototype series is not technically closed, it will no longer operate as a separate studio. Here's the statement they received from parent company Activision:
Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience. Radical is a very talented team of developers, however, we have explored various options for the studio, including a potential sale of the business, and have made a difficult conclusion through the consultation process that the only remaining option is a significant reduction in staff. As such, some employees will remain working for Radical Entertainment supporting other existing Activision Publishing projects, but the studio will cease development of its own games going forward.
Reddit is now hosting an AMA session with the Dead State developers (thanks nin). Word is: "We are Brian Mitsoda (Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines) and Oscar Velzi (The Age of Decadence). Brian is the Project Lead on Dead State and Oscar is the Lead Artist. Dead State is a survival RPG similar to Fallout with tactical elements similar to Jagged Alliance or X-Com. The game focuses on leading a group of humans after the collapse of society. Dead State is currently on Kickstarter with 6 days to go."
A new Kickstarter Campaign for Rapid Assault looks to raise $100,000 to complete this online tactical shooter from Cornered Rat Software (Battleground Europe, World War II Online) they explain will be played on "huge maps where infantry and armor populate the battlefields in action-packed scenarios built around historical WWII battles." The Rapid Assault Website is accepting signups for closed beta testing, and here's a bit on the game:
This project has been in development for 14 months and all core systems and features are complete. It is in early stages of Beta with 1,000 testers and our studio needs additional funding to complete the first content pack and final polish and to bring it to market.
How is "Rapid Assault" different from other games like RO and WoT?
RA blends simulation-style realism with fast action team play and does it by combining infantry and armor on iconic WWII battlefields. Our game engine is built with realistic ballistics and physics based damage and every vehicle is comprised of historically accurate, component based models. Players can choose to play single maps or join in campaigns of linked scenarios with player and team scoring carried throughout the campaign.
This update on the Kickstarter Campaign for Sam Suede in Undercover Exposure announces this fundraiser has been cancelled, having only attracted a fraction of its $500K goal. The update references allegations that the participation of Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe in the Kickstart was overstated, a dust up which Lowe defused, and indicates they will continue to pursue completing the game. Thanks nin.

Funcom announces development of a new MMOG based on LEGO minifigures, apparently undeterred by the fairlyrapidfailure of LEGO Universe, which triggered the demise of developer Netdevil. "The market for family-friendly online experiences intended for children and youngsters is brimming with potential," says Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. "Being able to work with a world-renowned brand such as the LEGO® brand to develop an MMO for this audience is incredibly exciting to us as game developers and for Funcom as a company. The mild temperatures this week are to give way to a little more heat today, but the forecast calls for low humidity. Out of all the possible combinations of weather one can experience in the northeast, temps in the 90s and humidity in the 50s is about as unusual as it gets... To my experience, both earthquakes and tornados have occurred more frequently.
