Diablo III 72 Hour Restrictions to Change

Two aspects of the up to 72-hour waiting period digitally purchased versions of Diablo III now undergo before full functionality are unintended, Blizzard tells Kotaku, and will be addressed "as soon as possible." The delay (which they say can be as short as one day) is to allow them to process credit card information before allowing unverified accounts the ability to buy and sell items and access areas of the game where commerce is conducted. But it is not intended to impede player's progress as it currently does. Here's word:

However, as an unintended consequence of these security measures, players who purchase the game digitally after patch 1.0.3 are temporarily being capped at level 13 and not able to proceed beyond Act I. We are working to correct this as soon as possible and will provide another update when we have more details to share.

Curt Schilling on 38 Studios' Demise

Former baseball star Curt Schilling was interviewed this morning on the Dennis & Callahan sports radio show on WEEI in Boston in the first such appearance since the demise of 38 Studios, the developer he founded. Boston.com quotes some of the conversation where Schilling spoke of investing all of his personal assets into the company while never a penny back out. He also says his former employees "have every right to be upset" as they were "blindsided" by the studio's closure after he promised a month or two of advance warning, admitting he "bombed on that one in epic fashion." He also describes the last ditch effort to save the company that failed because Rhode Island refused to go along with the plan, and addresses accusations that his acceptance of tax credits and loan guarantees from the state were hypocritical in light of his outspoken conservative viewpoints: "I don't know how that correlates to this. I don’t have any problem with government helping entrepreneurs and businesses." Thanks JJ.

Nuclear Union Announced

1C Company announces development of Nuclear Union, a "large-scale" post-apocalyptic role-playing game in the works at Men of War developer Best Way. The Nuclear Union Website is online with a debut trailer, and here's a bit on the game:

Every child knows the glorious story that lead to today. When the Capitalist Alliance lead by the Americans refused to allow our defensive screen in Cuba, in 1962, and then attacked us with nuclear weapons. However our Motherland and the Soviet Forces were better prepared than the dogs knew. We leveled them, and half the planet, to show our sickle is sharp and the hammer hits hard indeed!

While the Americans celebrated that they reduced Moscow to rubble, our air defenses kept the city from becoming ash. Almost the entire planet surface was contaminated by their bombs, but it didn’t matter as we had moved underground days before. The Soviet Union did what we have always done, survived. The country underwent a massive evacuation of the most important citizens, leaders and industries to a pre-built network of specifically equipped bunkers.

It’s 50 years later, 2012, and our glorious capital city, Pobedograd (Victory City), is a beacon of hope. It’s time to go outside again brothers and sisters, time to see what has become of our Motherland and her proud cities and towns. Grab a weapon and join us!

3DMark DirectX 11 Tech Demo

There's a new 3DMark DirectX 11 Tech Demo trailer on the 3DMark for Windows Website showing off the next version of Futuremark's gaming benchmark, which they expect to release following the official launch of Windows 8. Here's word:

3DMARK DIRECTX 11 TECH DEMO In the trade town of Scarport, buildings cling to canyon walls above canals of lava and provide shelter from the toxic volcanic atmosphere. Gaudy neon signs flicker as steam rises from the molten rivers running beneath the town. A trader walks along ledges carved from the volcanic rock, smoke swirling around her flowing cloak. Her robotic sentinels keep watch, but what dangers lie hidden in the shadows?

The 3DMark DirectX 11 tech demo brings this scene to life with intelligent tessellation and advanced volumetric lighting using real-time light scattering. The visible particles and clouds of smoke in the scene react to other objects using fluid dynamics simulation. Post processing, ambient occlusion and various lens effects complete the look.

Op Ed

PlaySF - Explore And Expand, Or Exploit And Expire?
But it never feels as if we’re inhabiting a real universe. There is almost no sense of a ‘living’ galaxy; even in the Sword of the Stars series, which goes to some effort to introduce smaller, independent colonies and galaxy-stalking Grand Menaces like the System Killer, these events feel like random acts of punishment rather than the chance events of a real galaxy. The only standout in my mind here is the retro-styled Distant Worlds, which populates its galaxies with odd lifeforms, wormholes and snippets of storyline, as the only 4X where I’ve felt a genuine sense of exploration – that feeling that something, anything could be out there.

Out of the Blue

Today is the 16th anniversary of the release of QUAKE on June 22, 1996. I'm pretty over my disappointment of losing my saved game on my last attempt to play id's classic shooter using LordHavoc's DarkPlaces Quake Mod, so I think I'm ready to give that another go in celebration. Get me some nine inch nails, I'm hitting the slipgate!
