The Associated Press
has this month's retail report from the NPD Group, who say sales of video game hardware, software and accessories for the month were up 0.4% to $3 billion on strong sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
, and they call this the best November on record for retail game software sales. Here's more:
Continue here to read the full story
The results give a mixed picture of the holiday sales period that is a make-or-break time for video game companies.
Hardware sales, which include game consoles and accessories, fell 9 percent from a year earlier to $982.4 million, mainly because last November's figures were boosted by the launch of Microsoft Corp.'s Kinect motion controller for the Xbox.
Sales of software — that is, of the video games themselves — rose 15 percent to $1.67 billion. That's much more than the 3 percent increase Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter was expecting.
"Modern Warfare 3," a military shooter from Activision Blizzard, was the month's best-selling game, beating last year's "Black Ops," also from Activision Blizzard, by about 7 percent.

is closing down, saying founder and CEO Sergei Grigorovich attributed this to personal reasons, which are not disclosed. Word is employees will be paid through February. NeoGAF
has a story on this that seems to handle the article better than our machine translation, saying it mentions unconfirmed speculation that Grigorovich was not happy with progress on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
, and that there was danger that Ukrainian law enforcement would seize the company and its assets. There's also a post on The Ascian Gaming Blog
with some leaked screenshots and concept art from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, the planned first-person shooter sequel with a now-cloudy future. They also have a link to a tweet
they say confirms GDC's closure (it translates to "GSC Closed"), though Dmitri Bourkovski, who tweeted that, subsequently clarifies
: "To everyone reading this because of #GSC & #stalker2 news - I have no connection to GSC and I'm not Sergei Grigorovich (CEO of GSC). Cheers!" Thanks Joao.

promotes Unstoppable Gorg
, the outer space tower defense game in the works at Futuremark Games Studio for release early next year on Windows PC, Xbox LIVE Arcade, and iPad early next year. Here's word:
Continue here to read the full story
HELSINKI, FINLAND - DECEMBER 9, 2011 - Get ready to experience a revolution in tower defense when Futuremark® Games Studio brings Unstoppable GorgT to PC, Xbox LIVE Arcade and iPad in early 2012. A new trailer and screenshots released today showcase the unique orbital gameplay in Unstoppable Gorg, an upcoming tower defense game that challenges you to defend the solar system from fearsome aliens by sending satellites into orbit. Unlike other tower defense games, in Unstoppable Gorg you can move your towers by rotating the orbits that surround planets, moons and space stations. It's a new gameplay experience that teleports the tower defense genre into unimagined territory.
Unstoppable Gorg is a lovingly crafted homage to vintage sci-fi films from the 1950s. Flying saucers, rubbery aliens, dodgy effects, it's got it all. The game's story scenes were shot on film using models, miniatures and live action actors and then edited together with genuine archive footage to create a classic sci-fi experience that is out of this world.
Jaakko Haapasalo, Head of Futuremark Games Studio, who also plays the role of Radiant Beem in the game, said,
"With Unstoppable Gorg, we embraced the film techniques used in the golden age of sci-fi to create an authentic visual style that has never been seen in a game before. It's the difference between the Star Wars films that people love, with their special effects created with models, and the unpopular prequels with their heavy-handed CGI."
All day Wednesday I couldn't shake the feeling it was Friday. Now it's Friday and I have no such sense at all. I think I need to calibrate my calendar.
