From Dust DRM to Change

There's a From Dust PC Official Statement on the Ubisoft Forums announcing a change to the god game's DRM after the recent dust up over it requiring online authentication every time it is launched. Here's word saying this requirement will be removed within a couple of weeks:

We recognize that one of our posts in the From Dust forum regarding the need for authentication in the game was not clear. We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding. Our tech teams are working on a patch that should release in approximately two weeks that will eliminate the need for any online authentication. This development time is required as we are working to ensure that those who have already started the game, and who’s progress is currently saved on our servers, will receive and save their game information locally. Once the patch is ready, players who already have the game will automatically receive the update on their next login and subsequent game sessions will be 100% offline.

Two PES 2012 Demos: First One Wednesday

Konami Digital Entertainment announces plans to release two demos for PES 2012, their association football/soccer sequel, with the first of them based on a preview build coming to Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on Wednesday, and the other to come next month based on a more final version of the game. Here's the deal:

The first demo will be released on August 24th and will be based on a preview build of the game. While there will be areas that are refined, KONAMI wants PES users to try out the game’s many new Teammate Control elements prior to launch and experience the realism that Active AI brings to PES 2012, and which have been singled out for extensive praise by the media. The demo will also showcase the individuality of the many teams in the game, and users will be able to pick from six teams and their playing styles – Manchester United, AC Milan, FC Porto, S.S.C Napoli, Santos FC, and C.A. Panarol – and pit them against each other in 10-minute matches. The demo will also showcase key Challenge Training elements, where fans can practice the new control systems to fully enjoy the game.

The first PES 2012 demo will not be truly representative of the final game, so KONAMI will issue a second free demo reflecting the final version’s feel and gameplay in mid-September for the same formats. This will also offer 10-minute matches, but with a different team roster of Tottenham Hotspur, FC Bayern Munich, FC Internazionale Milano, Rangers FC, Club America and Sport Club Internacional.

Deus Ex Clothing Line

A Deus Ex: Human Revolution clothing line is set to go on sale tomorrow in this Deus Ex: Human Revolution Store, announces musterbrand. Here's the word on this unusual bit of merchandising:

Available in North America and Europe at www.deusex-store.com, the DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION range of clothing has been designed in partnership with game developer Eidos-Montreal, ensuring the closest real-world version of the virtual items as possible.

The standout item in the DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION is Adam Jensen’s coat—a futuristic interpretation of a trench coat. This slick trench, adorned with signature vented holes, and structured sleeves, is inspired by DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION’s cyber-renaissance art direction. Just remember that you’re not actually augmented before leaving on your adventures.

“Standard logoed T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats are the norm,” said Knut Jochen Bergel, CEO, musterbrand. “musterbrand’s clothing lines are designed by top stylists, woven from the highest quality material, and cut so sharply they should come with a warning. DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION is already drawing praise for its unique design and playability – we’re aiming to replicate the game’s popularity with our clothing line too.”

Razer Declares PC Gaming Lives

Razer announces their full page in today’s Wall Street Journal (Global Edition) which is "an open letter to Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony’s Playstation and Nintendo’s Wii consoles." In conjunction, they say they will offer a "major announcement on the 26th of August during PAX Prime 2011 at 6pm CEST in Seattle, WA." They have launched pcgamingisnotdead.com to read their open letter to you, and if you prefer, the letter is reproduced below:

We have all heard the rhetoric about the demise of PC Gaming—the stories that console gaming will take over all gaming and that PC gamers will be left with shoddy ports of console titles.

The rumors of our untimely demise have been greatly exaggerated. We are more than 300 million PC gamers worldwide and this legion is growing every day. Today there are more PC gamers than all console gamers combined and we have been silent in the face of the closed gaming systems that have been propagated.

We, the PC Gamers, have been here since the beginning and have seen the industry grow to surpass movies and music, and we look forward to an open world where console and PC gamers will stand side by side as gamers in arms.

We are here today to tell you, that on the 26th of August, we will seek to end the silence and bring a new age of openness and innovation to all gaming. Together we shall remind you - that PC Gaming is NOT dead.

Dragon Commander Interview

This interview on RPGWatch talks with Swen Vincke of Larian Studios about Dragon Commander to learn some details about this upcoming strategy/RPG of Dragon Combat set in the world of Divinity. Swen explains how the project's concept evolved, the reasons for the timeframe in which it is set, discusses its steampunk elements, justifies the use of jetpacks ("Because it is cool. OK, you either hate it or you like it, but we like it."), outlines plans for multiplayer, and offers the following perspective on the advantages of self-funding its development:

The difference is that we are funding the game ourselves completely, which gives us much more freedom. There was always an excuse with the Divinity games. Something that was not right and there was always a reason for that and we were never happy about releasing it at that stage. This time while we are doing it on our own there is no excuse anymore.

It normally should be released next year, but there is no guarantee.

Portal Turrets in Bastion

A trailer on the YouTube from Bastion show the inclusion of a "mysterious gel" and turrets present in Supergiant Games' action/RPG. Out of the Blue

The weekend was very pleasant, considering it was spent in Atlanta, Georgia, which is certainly pleasant in and of itself, but it is also rather, well, warm this time of year. One of the festivities was a visit to a local chain called Taco Mac to try their chicken wings, which is a bit odd considering hot wings are said to have originated here in New York, but the idea was to see if my love for hot food could stand up to their hottest variety, which are called, simply, "Death." These were two grades hotter than a type called "Three Mile Island," which seemed ominous, but they were actually cake; nothing like the hottest variety of chili I make, and easily consumed without the aide of bleu cheese dressing or other crutches. On that topic, I also found some dried Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Chili) peppers to bring home, so it's possible my next batch of chili will qualify for that "death" moniker, so I'll have to be prudent.
