ARMA 2 ARG?

An apparent "hacking" incident on the ARMA 2 Website earlier today may have been the kick off of a new alternate reality game for Bohemia's military shooter series. The Bohemia Interactive Forums have discussion of the incident and attempts to sift through the clues to see if there's a deeper meaning to all this. Thanks PC Gamer.

Ubisoft Launching Movie Studio

French video game publisher and developer Ubisoft is launching a movie studio called Ubisoft Motion Pictures to develop films based on their videogame franchises, reports Variety. They note that last year's Jerry Bruckheimer produced Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time grossed about $335 million USD worldwide, and say: "Ubisoft's Paris-based film division is headed by Jean-Julien Baronnet, former CEO of Luc Besson's EuropaCorp. Gallic producer Didier Lupfer ("Gainsbourg") is in charge of production and development, while Jean de Rivieres, former topper of distribution at Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures France, handles marketing and international sales."

SOE Security Update

This SOE Customer Service Notification offers the promised update on this morning's security issue, which followed on their PlayStation Network nightmare. They say an outdated database of approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers has been compromised, but there is no evidence that their main credit card database was compromised, as it "is in a completely separate and secured environment." They warn to be "especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information," and outline the following changes they've made:

1) Temporarily turned off all SOE game services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

DC Universe Online Server Merges

Prior to the outage reported above, the DC Universe Online Website offered an announcement of planned server merges for SOE's MMORPG (thanks MMORPG.com and Gamasutra). Word is:

We have heard your concerns about queue times on the servers. This game is about people playing and fighting together so we feel your pain. Sometime in the next month, we are going to test new technology to meld all of our US and European PC and PS3 servers into four Super-Servers, one for each platform in each region. This will allow for more opportunities to queue and participate in other group related game mechanics. We are hoping to get this on our PC Test Server to start testing, again, sometime in the next month and then will tune it up for the PS3 platform as well. As soon as we know more about testing and timing we will let you know. But, believe this – it is one of our top priorities. Again, thanks for your patience, we appreciate your support.

Out of the Blue

It's tough to figure out the actual impact the death of Bin Laden will be at this point, but for all our sakes, I sincerely hope that it puts the world on track to be a safer and saner place going forward than it's been for the past decade.
