Far Cry 3 Confirmed

Computer and Video Games quotes Ubisoft writer Kevin Shortt speaking with Official PlayStation Magazine saying Far Cry 3 looks "pretty exciting," confirming development of a third installment in this first-person shooter series. "No I'm not," the writer replied when asked if he was working on Far Cry 3 during a junket for Avatar. "But I know the team are and what I've seen looks pretty exciting."

East India Company: Battle of Trafalgar Announced

Nitro Games and Paradox Interactive announce East India Company: Battle of Trafalgar, a standalone expansion for East India Company, the 19th century naval warfare RTS game. The expansion will be released through digital distribution on December 8, and in the interim there's an announcement trailer on the YouTube, and here are the first half-dozen screenshots. Here's a bit from the announcement:

A complement to the original East India Company, East India Company: Battle of Trafalgar recreates the legendary naval battle fought between the British Royal navy and the combined fleets of the French and Spanish navies during the height of the Napoleonic wars in late 1805. Featuring historically accurate ships from all three fleets along with the key naval personnel of the battle, East India Company: Battle of Trafalgar is a simulation of what in reality was the most decisive British naval victory of the war as, led by Admiral Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory, an outnumbered British fleet sank 22 enemy vessels off of the South West coast of Spain without a single ship of their own being lost.

Armada 2526 and Patch Now Available

Matrix Games announces that Armada 2526 is now available, offering a space-based strategy game designed by R.T. Smith, of the Total War series. Here are a batch of Armada 2526 screenshots, and this trailer and this trailer on the YouTube show off the game in action, while there are more details and links to purchase the game on its official product section. Also, the first patch for the game is now available to update it to version 1.01, which is apparently for the retail version (the Matrix Games edition ships at version 1.01); this patch can be found on AtomicGamer, The Patches Scrolls, and Worthplaying. Here's word:

In Armada 2526, you guide your race from its first interstellar journeys, until it becomes a mighty galactic empire. Along the way, you'll explore the galaxy, conduct research, diplomacy and trade, found new colonies, maneuver mighty star fleets, and fight epic battles. Create bustling colonies on foreign worlds to build powerful fleets, construct advanced buildings and research facilities that will help you master space and defend your civilization! In a close race for victory, alliances forged through bartering and good will can help tip the balance of power in your favor as alien empires seek power and glory at your expense.

Powerful tutorial and advisor features help any would-be galactic commander get up to speed quickly, and with endless possible strategies Armada 2526 offers many different strategies to best your alien foes.

Unlike many games in this genre, Armada 2526 focuses on providing a game that can be finished in a reasonable time and emphasizes decisive strategy over micro-management. Armada 2526 was also design from the ground up with the AI in mind and it can use all the features of the game that are available to the human player. The result is a much stronger opponent than in many other games and Armada 2526 can scale from small 2 player skirmishes to enormous galaxies with dozens of alien factions, up to the maximum your hardware can handle.

Mercs Inc Announced

Pandemic Studios announces Mercs Inc, an official announcement of the multiplayer sandbox game based on the Mercenaries franchise revealed earlier through a video on superannuation. The game had been in development at Pandemic Studios, and word is its development continues at the EALA offices, where the remnants of Pandemic landed, prompting them to say this is "the first Pandemic game to be developed by the studio at its new home in Playa Vista." Not much more is being said about the project at this time, and no official release date is set. "We are very excited to announce a new instalment in the popular Mercenaries series because it demonstrates our continued commitment to Pandemic's rich catalogue of intellectual properties," says EA senior VP Nick Earl. "From the studio at EALA, a core creative team is forging new ground and conceptualizing new ideas for this exciting franchise."

Call of Duty: World at War Patch & Server

A new patch is now available for Call of Duty: World at War, updating Treyarch's World War II first-person shooter to version 1.7. The new version fixes a multiplayer server crash exploit, a voice chat crash on systems with no default recording device, and an issue causing erroneous duplicate qport errors while adding an option for server admins to disable team switching. The patch to update version 1.6 to 1.7 is available on AtomicGamer, FanGaming, FileFront, Gamer's Hell, The Patches Scrolls, Strategy Informer, and Worthplaying, while a separate patch for the German edition is available on FanGaming, FileFront, Gamer's Hell, and The Patches Scrolls. Just Cause 2 in March

Square Enix London Studios announces release dates for Just Cause 2, saying the action sequel from Avalanche Studios is due in North America on March 23, 2010, and in Europe on March 26, 2010 for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Some new screenshots accompany the announcement, which includes the following description of the game:

Developed by Avalanche Studios and using the proprietary Avalanche 2.0 Engine, Just Cause 2™ features over 1000Km˛ (400miles˛) of South East Asian island paradise in one of the richest, most realistic game worlds ever seen. Snow-capped mountains, sun-kissed beaches, dense jungle and arid deserts create a stunning backdrop for a unique and compelling take on open-world gameplay.

“Just Cause 2 offers the freedom to explore and tackle the world in any way you choose”, said Lee Singleton, General Manager of Square Enix London Studios. “The grapple and the parachute mechanic will change the way you play open-world games, allowing players to be in the air in seconds, tackling missions from above and using the aerial advantage. If you prefer to stay on solid ground, the choices offered by the grapple are limited only by your imagination.”

As Rico Rodriguez, the Agency's most powerful weapon, players must take on the island of Panau and its military regime in order to track down Rico's former boss and mentor, Tom Sheldon, who has gone rogue with millions in Agency cash and intel. Using a unique grapple and parachute combination, there is no vertical limit as the air becomes your playground: grapple a passing plane in flight, hijack helicopters, BASE jump from the tallest buildings or mountains and leave a trail of chaos and destruction in your wake. Just Cause 2 offers players the freedom to attack missions any way they choose and, with over 100 vehicles and countless upgrades and collectibles, the choices for relentless adrenaline-fuelled action are limitless.

New Twin Sector Demo

Another Twin Sector demo is now available, offering a new sample of the now gold action adventurer game that's due for release on December 5. A Twin Sector demo was released in September, but there's no word on what's different in the new demo, and we've seen it referred to as the "North American demo," so it may not be changed at all. Word is: "We are excited to release the Twin Sector demo and give players a good introduction to what the upcoming Twin Sector release has to offer," said Howard Horowitz, Founder of Got Game Entertainment, LLC. "This type of first-person exploration and puzzling is the right mix of challenges and action that any type of gaming fan should try." The download is available on AtomicGamer, ComputerGames.ro, FileFront, and Gamer's Hell.

Diablo 3 Skill Trees Cut Down?

Hellforge has an article on Blizzard's reexamination of the skill trees in Diablo III, suggesting that skill trees are gone from the action/RPG sequel based on Twitter posts (thanks nin). A tweet from Friday says "We're implementing and will be testing a new system that changes how skills are acquired. That's all I'll say. :)" A tweet from yesterday follows up saying the trees are being "removed/changed," making it all sound up in the air: "With our tweet Friday about the skill trees being removed/changed, what approach do you think we might be taking?" Meanwhile, a new interview with Blizzard's Jay Wilson on Diablo Fans addresses this directly, saying trees have been replaced by "a purely skill-based system," though this still sounds subject to change:

About that, we've decided to remove the tree-type architecture and we are moving into a purely skill-based system. This new system is still in the development stages and if it does not work, we still have plenty of options to fall back on. Right now, we're just trying different things and getting a feel for the few ideas in regards to the skill system that we have going on right now. It differs from the World of Warcraft/Diablo II type hierarchical styles and is more of a skill pool/path than a tree per se.

Gold - Divinity II – Ego Draconis

cdv announces Divinity II – Ego Draconis is gold, and Larian Studios' action/RPG sequel is due for Windows PCs and Xbox 360 on January 5. Here's word on the game:

The sequel to the critically acclaimed action-RPG Divine Divinity, Divinity II - Ego Draconis transports players back to the wide-open, war-torn world of Rivellon where they’ll learn to read minds, plunder dungeons and ultimately learn to morph into a playable dragon at will. Developed by Larian Studios, Divinity II boasts a robust adventure with more than 60 hours of gameplay, teeming with massive dungeons and outdoor spaces to explore, deep on-the-ground and aerial combat and an intrigue to unravel that could unveil hidden truths and revive forgotten evils that will change the face of Rivellon forever.

Mercenaries Inc, Trailer

A post on superannuation includes a vimeo video that was a pitch demo from Pandemic Studios for Mercenaries Incorporated, a multiplayer sandbox game based on their Mercenaries universe that was presumably not picked up. It was recently learned that Pandemic is closing, though its IPs will live on at EALA.

CashCurtis announces the release of a preview copy of MetalMorphosis on their website, offering a futuristic shooter with elements of space exploration and real-time strategy that's entered in the Indie Game Challenge 2010. There is a clip showing off the game on the YouTube, and here's a bit:

Fans of hardcore first person shooter games are challenged to test their skills and abilities in MetalMorphosis: This action packed futuristic shooter features adrenalin-pumping destruction and mayhem from the beginning, and is guaranteed to test the stamina of any trigger-happy fans of the genre.

MetalMorphosis includes elements of space exploration and real-time strategy; its story kicks off in a not too distant future on earth’s first outpost on Alpha Centauri. Until now, alien life has never before been encountered, but upon arrival you find the base overrun by spider-like robots of unknown origin. Their origin on the planet was a previously undiscovered compound that had also been overrun.
